Montessori School? Anyone?

My daughter is gifted and has ADD and we are struggling to find her niche. I am thinking that Montessori school may be the right thing for her.... thoughts, ideas, advice?

Re: Montessori School? Anyone?

  • I agree with PP.  First, any school can call themselves a Montessori school and may not even have any teachers with true Montessori training.  Second, if the lack of structure may not be appropriate for a child with ADHD.

My DD (3) goes to a Montessori school.  We love her school.  It was the second Montessori in the nation to go to 8th grade, has been around since 1959.  I love that it's got such a history and a couple of the preprimary teachers have been there since 1977 and truly believe in the philosophy.  I know my DD's classroom is very dynamic.  They rotate the materials constantly so the children are force to do different things.  Her teacher is also very diligent in making sure that each student stays well balanced despite of their wants/strengths.  Also, as they get  older (5th, 6th grade) they start having them in desks (a little at first and a lot by 8th grade) and getting them ready for the transition to traditional school.

Visit the school maybe with and without your child.  Make sure the school has accredited teachers.  And speak with them about your concerns and see what they think?
