Infertility

Hello

Hello.  I'm new to tttc.  I used to browse the botb board daily, but I haven't been on in a while because it became too much for me to handle.  My husband and I have been trying to conceive since 10/07. We're now in the middle of our 4th iui cycle with injectables after 4 unsuccessful cycles of clomid/no iui.  I'm feeling a little discouraged since I've read, and been told by the nurses at the RE's office that after 3 to 4 cycles of iui it's probably time to move on to ivf.  I also have a cyst this cycle and the Dr let me go ahead with follistim anyway. This is the first time I have been able to do an injectable cycle with a cyst.  The Dr said if this iui doesn't work he thinks I should have a laproscopy and ovarian drilling done.  Are there many success stories out there for pregnancy resulting from an iui after the 4th try or from iui's with a cyst?

I'm trying to stay positive, but I'm finding it to be really difficult this time around.

  • Thanks for the warm welcome.
  • Hi there & welcome!  Sorry you have to be here.  I have also gone through 3 Clomid cycles (one w/ IUI), one Femara cycle, and am currently on my 5th injectible/IUI cycle.  As far as cysts go, it really depends on what type they are.  My RE always said that if they were small & non-functional (not producing hormones), then I could cycle.  Otherwise, they might interfere.  I think most RE's say as long as they're small (like 10mm or less), it's ok.  However....in my case....several cycles ago, my RE started commenting on a small cyst he was seeing on the outside of my ovary.  He said it wasn't hurting anything and not to worry about it.  Well, after our last c/p in November, I decided I wanted to do a lap to check for endometriosis and find out more about this cyst.  It turns out I had 2 peritubal cysts hanging off my right tube.  My RE likened them to fishing weights, saying they were weighing my tube down and possibly putting it in a position so that it was not capable of receiving the egg.  He said afterwards, it was a good thing we did the surgery and that our chances should improve.  He had also been trying to get me to go to IVF after 3 IUI's.  But, now he's saying we should try 3 more before IVF, due to having the cysts removed.

Long story short, most RE's don't proactively recommend laparoscopic surgery, but I am so glad I did it.  He also found endo, which I had hardly any symptoms of.  If your insurance covers it, I'd talk it over with your dr. and see what he thinks.  I felt like it couldn't hurt, and I needed piece of mind that everything was ok in there, if we did end up at IVF at some point.

     Good luck to you!

  • Welcome to the board.  I hope your IUI is succesful and you don't need to move on to other treatments. Either way, there are so many supportive women here who can help answer your questions along the way.  It is definately challenging to stay positive throughout this process.  Hang in there and good luck!
