Low sperm count question...

My husband has a low sperm count and we have been refered to a specialist, the first appointment is in about two months. Would I be going on Clomid to help us get pregnant if he is the one with the issue? Not sure how this works. Also, do many people get pregnant on the first round?

Thanks!!

Re: Low sperm count question...

  • Clomid will not his sperm count. I believe there are vitamins, herbs & medication that he can take to increase his count. Clomid is taken if you have problems ovulating & yes I got pregnant my first round of clomid but ended in miscarriage. He should be scheduled with an urologist.?

  • I can't really answer your question, but I thought I would chime in.

For us, I do not have any ovulation challenges. We were told our only option was IVF. That was after DH saw a urologist and was ruled out for any of the "simple" reasons his count would be low.

He also did 2 tests to confirm the DX.

They never offered to put me on clomid. The specialist will be able to help answer a number of questions for you. ?

  • Yes they could put you on clomid.  I did donor sperm IUIs which aren't as potent as fresh and they put me on clomid to up the number of targets, even though I have never had a problem ovulating.  We did the same thing with femara when my husband and I did IUIs for the same reason.  They do not have to do that, but some REs will do that.

You might want to try to get him to take some fertility vitamins (GNC has a special blend), no hot baths, start wearing boxers and stop all tobacco use (if any) in advance of the appointment to try to get his counts up.  Good luck!

  • It may help because with Clomid you produce more follies which means more targets for his sperm - some women on this board have gotten pregnant the first time.  I have done 6 rounds of clomid and 7 IUI and have not gotten pregnant yet - but I am also dealing with low counts all around.  I think it depends on how bad the actual morph, motility and counts are.  Good Luck - I hope the first time works for you.

  • It depends on how low the count is.  DH's was less than 1 million which put us out of range for anything but IVF.  If it is above 15 million, Clomid + IUI would be an option
