TTC after 35

Plan of Action for future

I am 37 and this is my 6th month TTC.  In my 3rd and 4th month TTC I had my progesterone tested due to a suspected luteal phase defect.  It was fine.  In my 4th month we did an unmedicated follicle study (largely to confirm ov and time the progesterone test).  I did ovulate and my progesterone was good.

3 years ago when trying to conceive my daughter I had my FSH tested and an HSG.  All was fine. It took 7 months to conceive DD -- not that long I know. (I requested all the tests because I had a miscarriage and complications after it that stopped ovulation for 4 months and made me stressed and concerned.)

If you were me, how many months more would you give it before engaging my Dr again?  I *think* the next step would be Clomid and monitoring based on some conversations with the nurse.  I have a BIG fear of multiples so am afraid of medications.  But, Not sure if there is any other steps to take.

Would love any advice.

Re: Plan of Action for future

  • I had luteal phase issues too, and I ended up trying B6 and baby aspirin to get pregnant.  (in addition to charting and CBEFM)  It worked for us in 3 cycles...I had already struggled for 20 cycles with unexplained IF when I got my BFP.  I had an appointment with a RE set for the following month when I got my BFP.  I did not seek help early, we just tried to relax and go with it, but I got really really stressed out after 18 months.  Just making the appointment took some of that stress off.  If you think seeing a doc will help ease your mind and will help you get that BFP, I say go for it now.  There are many ladies here who have taken meds and had healthy singleton pregnancies.  I am sure someone else can ease your fears about taking IF meds.  I wish you the best of luck!

  • I had several m/cs and it took 18 cycles to get to the point where we finally did the IUI.  Every bit of testing showed DH and I to be fine except for the only possible explanation the RE could come up with for me.  My problem was that my RE felt my cervix was too tight to allow the sperm to pass through in a timely manner and without being damaged, therefore we did the IUI with clomid and bravelle.

I was a little concerned with meds that there could be a chance of multiples, but I was being monitored, so I knew exactly how many folicles were developing and it didn't end up being that many.  I'm sure if you talked with your dr. and discuss your fears you could come up with a game plan depending on your follicular development.

     Good luck!

  • Since they say after 6 months you should see the dr if you are over 35, I would think you should probably make an appt if you don't get a BFP this cycle. Wow that was a run on sentence, but I am too tired to rewrite it now.

  • We are in a similar situation. ?My DS is was born 11/06, we actively tried for about 6 months and got a bfp on my 7th cycle (I have very short cycles). Took sometime for me to figure out my cycle after being on the pill for 15 yrs.and once i did...whamo..BFP! ?I am 37 turning 38 in july and have been trying actively since last july, dec i was diagnosed with 2 ovarian cysts...they checked progetsterone 1 cylce after a medicated cycle to bring on a/f..now I have just finished my 2 round of clomid...So my advice to you...Call the dr and start the process! ?Don't wait, to "see" if there is another problem...be proactive...As for clomid the chances of having twins goes from 1% in an unassited pgcy to 9-10%...not a huge increase!

    Good luck!!!?

This is what my doctor told me too. I'd make an appointment.

  • My situation is completely different, so I don't really have any advice other than seeing an RE. ?I never tried Clomid, but I am OK with selective reduction if it ever comes up.

    Best of luck to you!?

  • I would wait until after cycle 7 to see your Dr only because that is how long it took with your daughter.

If you are considering Clomid but are afraid of multiplies I would see if the Dr would give you Femara. It works just like Clomid but doesn't have the same side effects (won't thin your uterine lining and no increased risk of multiplies).  I might try Femara if my next round of Clomid does not work.

Good luck and I hope you get pregnant soon.

  • Thanks for the advice all. I forgot to mention that my husband had an SA the month I got pregnant (almost 3 years ago) . We got the results after I foudn out I was pregnant so we didn;t pay much attention.  But, they were not great.  Motility and Morphology had poor #s.

Maybe that is a step we should take. -- anotehr SA.  Should he contact his GP or shoudl I wait until i see my OB?
