Pedi or Family Practice

Re: Pedi or Family Practice

pedi - but I am switching to FP in the hope that I will have care that is illness-focused rather than having to deal with all the parenting advice/input.  The last handout they gave me had a whole page on how to give a time out (including holding the child in place for as long as it took).  STFU.  I can't stand it.  so I'm hoping a FP doc will leave the parenting to me and just heal illness/vax when needed.

Ew, that would be annoying. SIL takes her DD to a fam practice. She loves it, says the doc know them as a family, so if the DD has something then the mom or dad get it, the doc already knows whats going on and can just call something in rather then another office visit. She also likes that there are WAY less kids there, so DD is exposed to less germs at visits.

  • I have DS1 at the FP with DH and I, and DS2 at a pedi. I keep going back and forth with wanting to move DS1 to the pedi. I like having the FP b/c like you said, if DS gets sick, I can call them back and say now I've got it and they can just call me in something. It's a lot more family orientated care, and like Zenya said - less advice, more health care.

However, with DS2 and the pedi - they seem to be a lot more involved with his development at his check ups. Also, the after-hours care, the nurse line, the way they handle vacc and flu shots - it's all better at the pedi. Since our pedi knows that DS2 is a younger sibling, he still asks about things related to DS1, and doesn't treat me like a first-time mom, even though DS1 isn't his own patient.

My FP office closes early a lot and they take vacations a lot more. Pedi is a practice of several Drs so that's not something that would happen. I think they both have their advantages.

  • The girls and I see a family doctor. Mitchell sees a pediatrician. DH sees a different family doctor.

The only reason Mitch is somewhere different (he started where we are at) is because the family doctor wasn't being very helpful with some issues he was having and the pediatrician definately understood him, as a baby, much better...my girls were both very easy, medically, and they absolutely LOVE the Family doc, so I couldn't move them.  Mitch--he's his own guy, and has his own issues and I needed someone who wouldn't blow me off about them.

DH has been going to the same guy forever....
