Infertility

Need thoughts- New job + IVF?

So I am currently in the 2ww for IUI #7, but I am not feeling so positive.  We have an IVF consult scheduled for 4/16 and then we will start IVF in May.

I got laid off in November and have been applying for all sorts of stuff but no one has called.  We are REALLY hurting financially, but I have to say the plus side is that I have been able to not worry about DR's appointments.  I was at the RE EVERY DAY last week, and I can't imagine how hard that would have been if I was working.  But I have an interview today and it's for a job I really would like.  But I am so terrified that I am gonna take a job, and then have to start IVF and need to ask for days off already.

How do you working girls do it??  I know you need AT LEAST a day for ER, and then I am sure for ET.  Anyone else out there that started a new job before starting IVF?

  • I have heard of people having to do it. I think you need to do what is right for you. Sick time?

You need a day for the ER and two days for the ET.

I am in a different position as I am leaving a job and we are making a cross country move to Texas next month.

I am currently in my last two weeks at my job. I am taking a day for my ER tomorrow and two days next week for my ET. I feel bad because that is my last week in the office, but I gave them 2.5 months notice and I need to do what I need to do.

Would you?consider?delaying IVF a month? ?Maybe then you could have a month at the new job before needing some time off.?

  • I had this issue...I started a new job and the bcp for IVF#1 the same day.  I didn't say anything in the interview other than when she asked about a start date, I said well maybe not until May 1st but it will depend on when you offer the job.  When she offered, she brough up the start date and I laid it all out on the table.  What we agreed to do is start me at part time (but I still got the health insurance started with the IF coverage...yeah!!) until May 1st.  My ET should be done before that time but I just have to take my days off when I have appointments and get my 20 hours in at other times.  I wouldn't have accrued enough sick time for me to work full time and take time off so this worked well for me.  Plus she's letting me flex time for the week of ER/ET in case I can't get my full 20 hours in that week.  Just be honest and upfront about it and you can find a solution.

If you get the offer, just mention that you have a tentatively scheduled minor surgical procedure that you might need a few days off for.  It's rarely a problem - people have pre-existing plans even when they take new jobs and employers are usually understanding of that.

  • I'm in the same boat. I've been at my new job for a week, and I told my boss my first day I had some medical stuff coming up that might require me to come in late a few days and be out for a few days, but that I could schedule it to an extent. I'm waiting until the end of May to start BCP so I can be in the swing and potentially work from home the days I'm off after ET.

Fortunately my schedule is flexible enough that I can come in later so long as I work my 9 hours.

  • I agree with Elizabeth.  Her way of putting it is really good, and I've found that most employers are accommodating when you tell them about things upfront.
