Prepping prefolds?

I have some unbleached prefolds that I need to prep. I know I need to wash them several times. I'm wondering if I can wash them in with other laundry (not other cloth diapers, just clothes) as long as I use CD safe detergent.  Also, I read that 3-4 washes is enough. Does this sound right for prefolds?

 THANK YOU!

Re: Prepping prefolds?

  • I don't know if I'd wash them with other laundry but that's just me.  I think I did wash-wash-dry about 5-6 times with my PFs.  Each cycle just makes them that much more absorbant.

  • I *think* the pack of info I got from GMD suggested not washing them with other laundry because of the natural oils being removed...or something like that.

I did find that for the prepping, set your dryer for 20 minutes and clean out the lint trap after 20 min is up.  Then set again, and repeat.  They fluff up much better with a clean lint trap and they have SO much lint at first!

  • With my unbleached prefolds from GMD I boiled them.  I did 1/2 dozen at one time with a stock pot and put a squirt of dawn dish soap and boiled them for 20 minutes.  Then I put all my prefolds (I had 2 dz) and dried them on high in the dryer.  To be safe, I did one hot wash/cold rinse without detergent and then dried on high in the dryer.  My prefolds were perfect and it cut down on all the washing & drying.
