Speaking of SIDS

The Co-sleeping post reminded me of an article in Parade magazine this weekend.  It said that having a fan in a room can help prevent SIDS.  The theory is that the child gets too close to the bumper/blanket, etc. and breathes in too much CO2 so having a fan on to circulate the air may help prevent it.

  • I didn't read the article but I've seen a lot of people mention the ceiling fans on the Tri boards. My concern with this idea is that there are a lot of people out there that seem to think ceiling fans mean using a big puffy bumper is going to be safe all of a sudden. A fan may help with air circulation, but it's not going to do squat if your kid gets his face smashed in a cushy surface and can't move/breathe. By all means use a fan, but have some common sense as well in regards to bumper/blanket safety.?

  • Rebus - I agree.  I see the fan as being an additional way to preven sids.  It should definitely not be the only precaution.

  • We always have a fan on when DS is sleeping for that very reason.

I'm sorry, but I do not see the big deal with bumpers. Both of my children have/had bumpers and by the time they were old enough to move around and actually be able to get their face in the bumper they were old enough to move their face out of the bumper. I just don't get why people think kids will get their faces stuck in the bumper and suffocate. Has this really ever happened?
