Convertible crib or not ?

Hi all,

ok I'm going crazy crib shopping and everytime I see something to look out for, something else comes up!

Questions:

1 - Do you have or are going to buy a covertible crib or not and why?

2 - Will you choose a drop side or not and why ?

Thank you all for your comments!   Smile

Re: Convertible crib or not ?

  • We bought a convertible crib because I could justify spending $400 on a crib that grew with the baby.  I absolutely LOVE it.  We bought the Babi Italia Pinehurst in Espresso.  It beautiful and very sturdy.

  • We went with a convertible, so it can grow with baby.

Also, DH and I are pretty agile/strong//fit, so we didn't see the need for a drop side.  Neither of us will mind lifting baby in and out, even as he gets to be 30 pounds.

  • 1.  We will not be getting a convertible crib this time.  Our last one quite literally fell apart when it got to the toddler stage.  Not all of them will acutally hold up long enough to "grow with baby" so we're not going to make the financial investment this time.

    2.  We will probably get a drop side or one of the ones that folds down because I am very short and it's difficult for me to lift a 20lb baby out of a crib without putting the side down.

  • We purchased a convertible crib, but it does not come with all the converting parts and we are not buying those at this time. We got the Davinci Parker

I chose not to get a drop side crib, because I think they might stop making those soon and I didn't want to have to replace it.

  • 1. Yes we did, it will convert into a toddler bed with the side rail (kind of like a small day-bed with a rail in front) and then it will convert into a full size bed later.

We spent too much money but it an amazing piece of furniture.

  • We plan to purchase a convertible crib which converts to a toddler bed and full size bed.

  • We ordered a convertable crib because it was the one we liked...the convertable part is a bonus.

I did not want a drop side, and now they are talking about banning them.

  • We got DS a convertible crib, and its a good thing we did. He learned to climb out of the crib before he was even a year old. So at that point, we converted it to a toddler bed. Yes, they are more money, but definitely worth it.

We plan on converting it to a full size bed soon since DD is due in a few months and we want to re-use the crib mattress. Plus, we want to make his 'big boy' room special for him as well.

Definitely get any convertible parts you need when you buy the crib. I have heard from people that they waited a few years to get the rails and when they did, they were either discontinued or colors had changed slightly so nothing matched.

  • We went with a convertible crib.  We still haven't decided if we will convert it to a toddler bed, when needed, or use the crib for baby #2 and get DC#1 a toddler bed.
  • Thank you all sooo very much ladies, your advise has been well received and I pretty much made up my mind!  I had no idea that the drop-sides were that scary, none for our little one ... thank you very much!

    Thanks again all ...  :o)

Same here... I about passed out when I found out how much the crib we picked out cost, but then I thought about it - if it's a piece of furniture that she will use for (hopefully) 18+ years, then I still want it to look nice when we get to that point.

The crib we got is made by AP Industries, and it is absolutely beautiful.

  • We bought a convertible crib and it is a drop side, I love it so far but havent used it!

  • We are going to get a convertible, stationary crib. I felt like drop side cribs, in a moderate price range, were still wobbly. However, I'm short (5'3"), and I am worried about bending over on the lowest setting. However, convertible, stationary cribs typically come to only about my waist, making it possible to reach the lowest setting. We found one we liked that seems pretty sturdy for $300 at BRU - and I felt like that was a good solution.

    ?HTH!?

  • Yes, we chose a convertible crib...we originally chose a mid priced one at BRU but they stopped stocking it so we just ordered one from BBB that is a little more money, but very sturdy!  I have no doubt that it will hold up and make a great bed.  It just made sense to spend the money to buy a quality crib that can be used as a bed instead of saving a little money for something that can only be a crib - they change the safety guidelines so often its not like you can count on selling it to recoup a bit of money towards a headboard later.

We did get a dropside.  I know they are talking about banning them but of all of us, our friends, kids we babysit, etc. not one of us has had a problem with the dropsides!  I am short 5'2" and now from babysitting that it is hard (and dangerous at times) to try and reach over for a heavier baby when the mattress is set low.  We will make sure that we convert the crib to a bed when/if the our child starts to try and climb out, which is when I would worry most.

  • 1. We did not get a convertible crib, since we plan to use the whole nursery set for all of our kids.  I couldn't justify buying all of that stuff over again for our next babies.  I just plan on buying DD her big-girl bed (and assorted goodies!) when the time comes.

    2. We bought a dropside, but it's currently not working, because when we moved the movers couldn't figure out how to set it up. *grrr*  Anyway, I'm short so really needed this.
