can I whine?

I know this is my 3rd pregnancy so I shouldn't be acting like such a big baby, but I am having a really hard time with food and exercise this time around.

With Ian, I was depressed and then had horrible m/s for 5 weeks so I lost weight and didn't feel like eating.  Then right when I gained back the weight that I had lost I found out I had GD so I had to go on the diet, so food was never an issue.

Then with Lila I was up almost 30 lbs before I got pg so I was just excited to look pregnant instead of fat, so again, food wasn't much of an issue.

I didn't have trouble losing the baby weight either time and the weight I am now is my "normal" weight.  The weight I lost on WW (that I've AWed like crazy) was weight I put on becaue of one _hell of a year--got married, finished law school, took the bar exam, moved across the country, started a new job, Ian was diagnosed with Aspergers...

I gained 19 lbs the first time and 25 lbs the second, so I have no rational reason for thinking I'll gain 80 lbs this time or won't be able to lose it, but I'm having a really hard time figuring out what is a normal amount to be eating.  I feel like I am hungry all of the time and while I'm eating healthy 98% of the time, I feel like I am constantly eating.

I've also been trying to keep up all of my normal work outs, which my dr said was fine as long as I listened to my body.  But I normally run 3-4 miles at about a 8:30-9:00 min pace, but today I ran 1.5 miles at 10:00 min pace and walked the other 1.5.  Normally, I would push through tiredness/cramps, but I don't think I can do that now.

I know this is long and I don't really know what the point of telling you all of this is.  I guess I just wanted to whine.  Thanks for listening. :)

Re: can I whine?

  • I feel ya. This time I wanted to be sick just so I knew I was pg. If you are lucky, the hungry all the time will pass and you will be running like normal in no time.

Once again I realize that I am so slow when I run. I still do 6miles 3 times a week but only at 10-9min.

  • (((hugs))) If you're tired and hungry, you're tired and hungry. Try not to stress about it too much. You sound normal to me.

  • I commend you for worrying about it! You just want to be sure that you are staying healthy while pregnant; I see nothing wrong or whiney about that. Have you considered loosely following the GD diet? All in all, it's a pretty healthy way to eat. You wouldn't need to be so strict about the carbs, but making sure you ate plenty of protein, fruits, veggies and whole-grains is a great way to keep your weight-gain under control and still be free to eat when you feel hungry.

I have been doing this, and I've been feeling great. I've gained 8 lbs total so far, so I'm right on schedule to gain the 15-20 lbs my doctor recommended(since I'm over-weightEmbarrassed Three babies in three years has left me haggard!). I haven't had the time or energy to work out regularly, so we're especially pleased with my slow, steady weight-gain. I'm eating really well, and eating whenever I'm hungry, and if I end up having GD again, being stricter with the diet won't even faze me because I've already been following it loosely.

  • Pregnancy is so draining. Just listen to your body. If you are hungry, eat. If you are tired, slow down. That's the most you can do. Don't worry about things that haven't happened and that are out of your control. It's not worth it!  Feel better!
  • To a certain extent I think your body will gain what it needs to gain no matter what you do food/exercise-wise.  With Kate, I was pretty vigilant about what I ate, walked 4+ miles every day, and did power yoga 4 times a week.  I gained 38 pounds and she was 2 wks early.  With this one, I haven't been nearly as careful about what I've been eating and have exercised way less.  I'm 38 wks as of yesterday and gained 39 lbs.  I was the exact same (underweight) starting weight for both pregnancies.  It sort of seems to me like it was out of my control.  I lost it really easily and quickly with Kate and I assume I will again.  If not, I'll just diet/exercise.  No biggie.

If you're eating healthy and still running, even if it is slower, that is really all you can do.  Your body will gain what it needs, and you know how to lose it afterwards so try not to stress about it.
