yes, it's pronounced shay-muss (as a pp said), it is irish and there was a really popular guy in my high school with that name.

There is a character in the Harry Potter series with that name and when I was younger I had never heard of it before so I pronounced it Sea-mus. But yeah it's supposed to be Shay-mus.

Even thought it is a name, I think the spelling is awful. The sound of it I don't mind, but the spelling ruins it for me and I could never use it for that reason (unless I was living in Ireland where it probably wouldn't be an issue).

It's a real name - and it's my first choice if I have a boy...but my dh isn't sold, says everyone will pronounce it wrong and will call him seman.
