Minnesota Babies

Nannies

Hi all -

I'm pregnant with my first and am debating on what to do about childcare. My mom has graciously agreed to watch the baby two days a week so I only need part-time care for the remainder. I am thinking about finding a part-time nanny. Do any of you use a nanny? If yes, did you go through an agency or find the person yourself? Also, what is the average cost of a nanny? I am assuming between $20-30 depending on experience but want to see if I'm close (or not).

Thanks!

Re: Nannies

  • If you decide to do a nanny, go to collegenannies.com and they can help you make a decision that fits your needs.   I was a nanny through this service and found it great for both the parents and the nanny.  The service interviews and trains all of their nannies, and helps you find one that fits your schedule.  I think they charge the parent's around $15 an hour, and the nanny receives a good portion of that.  For a college student, it's absolutely perfect.  A lot of undergrads continue with the service after graduation due to the limited job market, and because it's really good money for a wonderful job.  Also, a lot of their nannies are elementary ed. students and graduates, and have a lot of childcare experience and training through that.

     Hope that helps!

  • I was a nanny for many years in Boston and here in Minneapolis.  I used Nannies of the Heartland as my agency here and their "sister agency" in Boston.  If you go through an agency, they will screen and evaluate all the nannies you have to choose from so you don't have to do the legwork.  They do charge a placement fee.

If you're looking for care for a newborn, you're probably looking to pay $16-17/hr over the table, $15/hr under the table.

  • If you want to search around and access some profiles, Care.com is pretty good and another pg friend of mine suggested sittercity.com, too. I'm still looking around, too, but need full time during the school year and summers off.  Tough to do!
  • I was a nanny, and I made $30 an hour while I was in school, but that was for 2 school aged children.

I think $20 is a solid estimate, though college students might be hard to find, because of their schedule. I'd post on nannies4hire.com if I were you. Both my sister and cousin have nannied through that site.
