Rice Cereal in bottle...yes or no?

DH's daughter is 14 yr old and when she was a baby he put rice cereal in her bottle at 6 weeks.  He knows that this practice is no longer the norm and that the earliest the pedi will give the ok will be 4 months, if not 6 months.  The other day he mentioned we'll need to get different nipples for our bottles when it's time.  I google'd and it seems the most common practice is to use a spoon and not put it in the bottle for various reasons (choking, overeating and getting them used to a spoon are a few I saw).  Is this correct?  Just wondering what others experiences have been.

  • You got it right.

  • It is not reccommended to add cereal to the bottle. It is best to start directly with spoon feeding.  The info about choking is all correct.  It is also shown to lead to an increased risk of obesity.  They are getting extra calories but not feeling full. That being said, we have to thicken DS's feeds due to his severe reflux.  And yes, we had to buy different nipples. I wouldn't advocate doing it. But, if it is necessary than yes I would purchase the Y-cut nipples.
  • Our pedi told us not to put it in the bottle. We started doing rice cereal from a spoon at 4.5 months.
  • Our DS has really bad reflux and at the recommendation of our pediatrician we tried mixing an a tablespoon of rice cereal per 2 oz of breastmilk. We did this at about  2 months of age.The logic being that the thicker liquid would not travel back up so easily. We used the Y cut nipples. Unfortunatley, the Y cut nipples allowed too much to come out at once and caused my son to spit up. So we didn't continue it. With DS #1, the same pediatrician didn't recommend rice until 4-6 months. We started at about 5 months because DS was such a big eater ( 36 oz a day). With DS #1 we were instructed to use a spoon. So I guess there is a time and place for everything and go with what your gut and your pediatrician tell you.

  • Our pedi said no cereal in the bottle. ?The only time?
I have heard it recommended is for reflux issues.
