dog sensing impending labor? - poss. TMI

Okay, this is going to sound really weird/disturbing especially to those who don't have dogs, but it's got me wondering. Let me preface this by saying that one or both dogs frequently accompany me to the bathroom because I'll pet them while I'm on the throne (also weird, but it is what it is). One of our dogs (Marley, the mma's boy I've had since he was 8wks old) has been exhibiting odd behavior since yesterday. Before I was pregnant, he always seemed to know when I was on my period because he would "air hump" while standing or try to hump me. He is neutered and never humps anything otherwise, and hasn't been doing this at all during the pregnancy. Well, starting yesterday he has started "air humping" in the bathroom after I pee. While this can be disturbingly hilarious, it has me wondering if he can sense some sort hormonal change that may signal impending labor. Probably wishful thinking, but I'd be delighted if he's right!

  • LOLOL

I don't have an answer for you, but the visual is just too funny! My doxie only tries to hump my hubby's arm every once in a blue moon if they are playing. hahahaha

  • I've heard people say that their dogs knew and started acting differently. It wouldn't surprise me. After all, there are dogs that sense impending seizures, right?
  • "air humping" made me belly laugh!!  I'd suspect he knows something is coming...maybe not what...but something for sure.  Thank you for the laugh!
  • I think it is totally possible!! Before I was pg our dog would never give me the time of day when DH was home and now she is constantly laying right on my lap snuggled up close to my belly, even when DH is home.  I think they def have a sense of this stuff...
  • My dog does the same thing. I'll be sitting there, tending to my business and all of the sudden the door flings open and in she trots. She sits down by me and actually tries to put her head in my bare lap.  It's annoying but she's cute, I'll admit.
  • I think it's quite possible. They have an amazing sense of smell and perception. Plus, our bodies probably change concentrations of hormones and pheromones near that time... You got me curious..keep us updated :)

  • my dog predicted 3 of my friends pregnancies doing the "air hump" when they came by the house to congratulate me on my PG.

3 days before i want into labor he was "air humping" and eating the crotch out of my underwear.

    dogs are weird.

  • My little one kicked my cat while it was laying on my belly. She got up and looked at my belly then at me then pawed my belly. After that she wouldnt come near my belly for a while. Now she has started this thing where she will not stop licking me. My face, hands, anywhere she can lick. Maybe she is nesting and trying to clean me lol
  • this post makes me LOL.  Especially the air humping.  Thank you!  I was getting a mental image of my 95 pound chocolate lab doing this.  I believe there is some truth to it. I've been having braxton hicks pretty bad on and off for the last 3-4 days.  My dog has been WAY weird about it.   Like he senses the cramping/contractions (maybe in part of me being in pain and letting out an Eeek here and there!)...but he follows me around all the time.  More than usual.  And way more affectionate than normal.

Sometimes just for laughs we go to youtube.com and do a search for baby crying or baby laughing.  And then our  lab's ears perk up and look at the laptop screen all strange.  Our doggy isn't quite sure of the noise just yet. Can't wait to see what its like when the baby is really here!!!

  • It is possible. My cats and dog follow me around more now that I am pregnant. So we will see what happens. My dog is more protective of me and seemed to know before we did that I was pg.
