TTC after 35

Short LP?

This officially marks the first time I have asked the question....will you be so kind as to look at my chart?

This is just my second month officially charting so not much to go by I know. However I seem to have pretty varied temps and a short LP....any thoughts or experience with either of these?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Short LP?

  • That one chart does seem to have a short LP (8 days). I would keep charting and print them out if you end up seeing your doctor. I know there are some ladies here who have used B6 for lenghtening the LP. Do you use OPKs or anything to also help pinpoint your ovulation date? I'm sure someone will know why it gave you dotted crosshairs.I am no expert, by any means! I am just glad that the website does it all for me! Hopefully as you keep charting it will help answer your questions.

Funny you should ask about the OPK, I just got that this morning so will start right away. I also will grab some B6. Thanks!

  • It's hard to tell with the one chart. It could just be that your LP varies and this was just a short one.  Mine LP have ranged from 11-17 days.

I was told by FF expert that the dotted crosshairs happen when you have not given enough info for FF to be 100% accurate that you ovulated.  Make sense?  If you do temps and OPK's you will get solid crosshairs, like wise if you did temps and CM, or all three (temps, CM, OPK's).   That's not to say it's bad when you ahve dotted crosshairs.

I agree that you need to keep charting and hopefully it will show that your LP is really within normal range and this short LP was a fluke.

Thanks Birdie! The LP I agree, have to "chart and see". And I found a few charts on FF with wild temps like mine too.
  • My luteal phases have varied too.  I started taking a B-Stress supplement that has a lot of B6 in it.  My luteal phase is starting to get a little big longer.  I'm not sure if the B6 is doing it or not, but since I'm stressed out, I figured that the vitamins might help make me feel better if nothing else.

Are you using a basal thermometer?  I was using a regular digital thermometer for a while and my temps varied more.  When I switched to a basal body thermometer the variations were less pronounced.

  • Hi, Cathy.

Just a thought: Are you using ibuprofen at all? Before TTC, I used to take advil all during AF, and for any headache, etc.

I stopped taking it at the beginning of my first cycle charting after learning here and from TCOYF that it can interfere with ovulation.

Maybe it's just a coincidence, but my LP has lengthened. It was 11 days, then went to 13, then 14. And I can't think of anything else that I've changed. I am taking pre-natals, but I started that several months before we started TTC.

  • Some of your temps are all over the place. My first "real" chart was a mess because I wasn't temping at the same time. I also think dotted crosshairs can come in when your CM doesn't match your temps of O indications. I have also had LP vary from 11-13 days. I think another cycle of charting will help!

I agree, so very early in the game, who knows. It is the temps that make me wonder. I temp at exactly the same time every day (anal to begin with made that a bit easy to get on board with). Guess I will see what this cycle brings.

I started wondering because someone sent me a message saying "wow! your temps are crazy!". Ha.

  • Boy, your temps are crazy.  I wonder why they fluctuate so much.  Hmmm.  Mine are usually steady, but the last few days have been crazy because I have been sick.  I have noticed that if I take any medication at all, it really messes with my temps.  Are you taking any meds?

I don't really think your LP is short, because I don't think it is all that clear that you O'd when FF says you did.  So, I wouldn't worry about that too much until you get another chart or two (but hopefully you get a BFP and don't have another chart).

I think using the OPK's is a good idea.  I think it will give you more data to go by.

  • I agree with Holly - it's hard to see if your O date was really that last cycle. Maybe you should think about getting a CBEFM. I use it and it helps pinpoint the days before O so I don't have to depend on one lucky OPK or my temps. It's pricy but worth the piece of mind for me!
  • Have you checked our the 'chart gallery' on FF? You can search other  women's chart and compare it to yours.  I do that sometimes when I'm concerned about the way my chart looks to see if there are people with similar charts.  It helps.

Looking at your chart from Feb again, I noticed that you didn't continue to temp after 5DPO, this is another reason why you have dotted crosshairs.  If you had a solid crosshair to begin with and then stopped temping after you ovulated the solid would change to dotted crosshairs.  Just an FYI.

  • I have a short LP (8-10 days). When I was going to TTC, I asked my dr if it was going to be a problem, and he said "it doesn't matter." Whether that's true or not, I don't know but I didn't have any problems conceiving. My water broke at 34w with DC #1, and they suggested progesterone with #2 to help avoid that happening again. So with DC #2, I had to get shots in my thigh every week after 16w. My water still broke, but I was 36.5w.

So . . . I don't know if any of this helps or not. Just telling my side of the story. Good luck!
