Baby Names

Would the initials ARS bother you?

The name DH and I have tentatively decided on for our daughter is Abigail Ruth.  That would make her initials ARS.  Would that bother you?  It's awfully close to "arse," but I'm not sure that kids on the playground would be able to make that connection!  What do you think?

Also, what if she grew up and married someone with a last name that started with an S, then her initials would be ASS (assuming she made her maiden name her middle name).  But that's crazy to worry about, right?

Re: Would the initials ARS bother you?

  • A friend of mine who was just in my office grew up Amy Rachel S____.   I asked her (when I saw your post) if she had any problems.  She said no one ever said anything about it.  Kids don't even know other kids middle names unless they use it like Amy Jo or something.  She said not to worry about it when naming your dd.

As for marrying into something like A-S-S, I made a wedding monogram a few years ago for a girl who was doing just that.  We went through a variety of fonts and it took a while- but we were even able to make a monogram that looked graceful and elegant without screaming out what her initials were.   What I remember most about her was that she has such a great sense of humor about marrying into those initials.  Life is all about how you handle things and IF down the road that happens to your dd, hopefully she'll have the same great attitude.   Life could be a lot worse than not being able to monogram a lot of towels and luggage!

3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again

  • Abigail Ruth is an absolutely lovely name.  I would not even think about the ARS/arse connection.  I disagree with the idea that kids absolutely won't know other kids' middle names (I always knew my classmates' mns; they were in our yearbooks and school phone directories, in addition to class rosters, etc.), but I think that's too convoluted for kids to make fun of, generally.  Children's teasing tends to be over more obvious stuff.

I think it is way overthinking things to worry that she'll both marry someone with an S last initial and make her maiden name her middle name.  There are thousands of things that could happen to make this situation completely irrelevant.  Definitely not something you need to worry about now.
  • I think you're overthinking this.  Before I opened the post I sat for a second and tried to some up with some reason those initials would be an issue and I couldn't come up with anything.  And not all women move their maiden name to the middle spot when they get married (I dropped my maiden name and kept my original middle name), so on the off chance that she did marry someone with an "S" last name, it doesn't necessarily mean she'll end up with the A.S.S. initials.
  • I don't think ARS is going to be a problem, and I love your DD's name. My mom's name is Ruth and you just don't hear it often, congrats.
  • No, those initials wouldn't bother me at all.
    Married in 2008 - DD born in 2010 - EDD 6.15.2012!
  • Thanks so much for the thoughts, ladies!

I think we're pretty much set on the name -- I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something bad that I was ignoring!!!

Ditto. I absolutely love Abigail Ruth. It's so classy! ?

  • My hubby's initials are FAG--no joke. He had to be a very tough kid in junior high! He says it actually helped him develop his great sense of humor.
