Sippy cups?

I have a question about sippy cups.  My son will drink out of a sippy cup if we hold it for him, but he doesn't seem to get the concept of holding it himself.  Same goes for his bottles.  I'm not sure how to "teach" him to hold it himself, or if that's even possible.  He loves water and is still on formula (until we talk to the ped at his wbv on Friday), but I'd like him to be able to at least give himself water when he wants it!

 Any suggestions?

Re: Sippy cups?

  • Do you have the sippy with the handles? I would just put his hands on the handles, and he would kinda of hold on, and now after about a month, he is drinking out of it on his own. I also just let him play with it a lot, and that seemed to help. HTH!

  • I'm wondering about this too!  Mattie will hold on to a sippy and then throw it!  Or put the bottom in his mouth.  hehe.  When he does manage to get the spout thing in and water comes out, he looks all freaked out.

  • well, stop holding it for him!  :)

The kind with handles are easier for them to start with.   And just don't help after you get him set up.   He's 1, so he should have the dexterity to be able to pick it back up or flip it around.  But right now, if you keep holding it, he'll keep letting you.  Let him get a little frustrated and figure it out.  And then gush all over him about how proud you are of him since he tried so hard to do it!

It's funny - Ben tried to hold his own bottle I swear from the very get go.  We joked that he was trying even when he was a few weeks old.  I think we have a picture of him holding on.  He pretty much just grabbed things away from us when he got big enough to really do it.
