Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Sleepwear...confusing.

Okay, I have seen several posts on what others put their babies in at night...but to be honest, for me sleepwear is a bit of a mystery.  We live in Illinois, and though I am not due until mid-April, I was recently taken off the meds I was taking to keep my uterus relaxed (had agressive pre-term labor at 29 weeks)...so my docs think we'll meet him soon.  :)

I have sleep sacks...footed sleepers...gowns...

What should I put him in to sleep?  A combination of the above?  A onesie, then sleepsack?  Or if it's warmer a footed sleeper alone?  A onesie under the gown (which are long sleeved)?  His room is a little cooler than ours, and we are going to *try* his crib in his own room from the beginning.

I don't want him to bake, and I don't want him to be chilly....

Thanks for any advice, not sure why this is so hard for me to figure out!!!

  • Holy crap, I am so sorry for those I've scared with the above giant picture of my giant self.  :(  I truly am new at this!?!?

  • There is no magical pat answer for this. Take it as it comes. During the winter, when our upstairs gets so cold, DS wore a long-sleeve onesie, pj pants, socks, fleece sleeper, and a sleepsack. Now that it's warming up (in MI) we ditched the pants and socks most nights. A few weeks ago when it was super warm for this time of year we just did sleeper + sleepsack. You'll figure out what works. If baby is fussy and feet are cold, add socks. Sweaty on back of neck? Take off a layer. Trial and error! Good luck. :)

  • It really is trial and error. They always say to put one more layer on a baby then what you yourself are comfortably wearing. I don;t know how true this is for every baby, but you can usually tell if they are too hot or too cold.

  • We usually put K in a sleeper. If it was pretty chilly in her room, we would put a onesie under her sleeper.

  • I put DD in a onesie with everything. I'll use the blanket sleeper when the house has a bit if a chill. They do stay warm in those. I use footed sleepers and gowns interchangeably. With gowns, I always have her wear socks. With the other two, it depends on how cold her feet are. Keep them warm and cozy, but not overheated. You'll figure out what you both like. Don't sweat it.

  • It does depend on the baby and your preference.  DD does very well swaddled so we put on a gown (with the mittens that fold over her hands) and then use a swaddle sleep sack.

  • I agree with all above. You can also see a color change in you babies skin that will help you know if they are to cold or warm and you can fix it then. They say dress your baby about the same as you like to sleep so if you are warm and not using a blanket maybe only a thin footie pj, but if you are wearing a long sleeve shirt and pants and also using a blacket add the warmer sleep sack.
