J was 6lbs 13oz, and he was fine in NB size. He could fit into some premie stuff, but NBs fit him best. It's really going to depend on the size of your baby, which you obviously can't really know until the baby is born.
My son was 1 week overdue and weighed 9 1/2 lbs at birth. (He's long, rather than round.) Newborn were slightly big for the first month. He's transitioning to 0-3 now, and they're still much too big.
It's not so much the age, as the weight that determines clothes. My preemie just started wearing NB and 0-3 month clothes at 3 months old (10.5 lbs). I would bring one outfit that is small just to be sure. It was a pain in the butt to not have clothes for her LOL.
My son was 7 lbs 1 oz and 19 1/2 inches long and newborn was too big, but I wasn't going to spend money on preemie clothes. The big newborn stuff was fine.

Do you have any reason to think that your LO will be smaller than average? I would think that at 29 weeks you really wouldn't have any reason to think you would need preemie clothes. My OB said the average baby is 7 to 8 lbs. A baby that size would easily fit into newborn or even 0 to 3 month clothes. Newborn clothes generally are 5 to 8lbs. I took a newborn and a 0 to 3 month outfit with us. DS was 5lbs 12oz and 18 inches so he wore the newborn outfit . He probably could have fit into preemie clothes because the newborn stuff was too big for him. I really didn't want to waste the money on something he wouldn't fit into very long and even though the newborn clothes were a little big, there were just fine.
FWIW, I have a friend who's DS was born 8 weeks early. He was 4lbs and 19 inches. Because he was so long, he couldn't fit into preemie clothes.

This is being discussed on the 3rd Tri board and a few new mommies were saying that their newborns were swimming in the newborn size clothing. It sounds like preemie size clothes fit some full-term newborns better. I just thought I'd hop over here and see what you all thought. I have no reason to believe my baby will be born premature or smaller than average. I was asking more about the size of clothing.
DS was 7lbs,7oz and 20 inches long. He got down to 6 lbs,12 oz right after he was born and still did fine in the newborn sizes. I actually took a NB and a 3 month size outfit to the hospital just in case, even though he had growth concerns my whole pregnancy. I don't see the point in buying preemie stuff that will fit a couple of weeks, if that. They grow so fast anyway!

DD was born full term, 7 lb 4 oz - 19.5 in. NB clothes were a little big but she grew into them fast. I wouldn't waste the money on clothes that she would probably only wear for a week.

Re: Did your full-term baby need smaller than NB clothes?
My nascent blog
Yes - we should have put him in preemie clothing - but I'm too cheap
He was 6lb 12oz and 19 3/4" long
He was drowning in the NB stuff!
