Someone is giving me their crib but I wanted dark furniture and it is light wood. Can I stain the crib or is that not safe? I'm sure they make nontoxic stain right?
You could do it, but I imagine it would be a ton of work...you'd have to sand off the protective finish on every single slat to get the wood to take a new stain...then seal it when you're done.
Minwax does make a stain that has the polyurethane already mixed into it. (I forget what it's called right now...Polyshades, maybe?) You can use that to go over existing stain and polyurethane. It's a little more difficult to apply it evenly (just takes more patience) than if you were staining bare wood, but stripping a crib down to bare wood to start from scratch would be a nightmare.
I think you probably would want to have Hubby or a friend do it for you, though. Good luck!
