Crib bumper

What are everyone's thoughts on crib bumpers? We are picking out our crib bedding, and I've heard mixed feelings about them being un-safe due to the increase risk of suffocation. TIA!

Re: Crib bumper

  • There is a time where suffocation is a risk and a time when it is less risky. Most sets come with a bumper so unless you're just going to buy a plain sheet and skirt, you'll have one.

  • We are getting a mesh one that is breathable, but will still prevent the baby from getting their limbs stuck between the bars.
  • We will not be using one.  The crib will have a fitted sheet, and a crib skirt.  That's all.
  • We got a set that included one. I used one with my first son too.

  • We bought one that's breathable too.  Check this out...

  • It's a personal choice and I chose to use them.

DD has one and still uses it.  She was swaddled until 9.5 months and in a sleep positioner until she could roll over it at 6.5 months.  Once she could roll I wasn't worried about the bumpers since she could mover herself or her face away from them.

  • We've been very happy with the breathable bumpers.
  • We used one with both babies.  They came with our bedding sets and I wasn't too worried because I swaddled them and they stayed in the center of the crib.  Once they could move, roll, sit up, I was confident they could move away if uncomfortable.  Once they started standing up and/or trying to step up on the bumper is when I took them out.

It is completely a personal choice.
