Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Are you giving diluted juice to your 6mth old?

DD is having a hard time with poop now that we have started cereal. I have mixed in apple sauce and/or prune puree hoping to get things a-movin'.  I don't remember when I started juice with #1, so help me out.

At what age are you/have you introduced juices to your LOs diet?

ps-- she isn't interested in breast milk after she eats cereal.

  • We do give him juice sometimes in his sippy cup. I try to give him something like Vruit or V-8 Fruit Fusion. Both are 100% juice with no added sugars, but also have veggies in there. I water it down about half and half. He loves them!

  • My Amelia Stick out tongue has cronic constipation so I give her 2 oz juice with 2 ox water every day. We started that at about 6 months.

She doesn't drink it all usually but I like to offer the full 4 oz.

  • I talked to my pedi about constipation yesterday. She said apple sauce actually can cause constipation...but apple juice will help get things moving. Weird! So, she said to give DD one ounce apple juice with one ounce water twice a day.
  • DD's pedi told us shortly after 6 months that we could give her 1-1.5oz of apple prune to try to get things moving.  No more than 4oz a day though.

That is so crazy-sounding???  But I'm sure it makes sense in the medical world....

  • Applesauce actually isn't a great thing to give when your child is constipated. It contains a high level of pectin, which firm up stool. When we first started solids, pear juice helped out a lot with my DD. We don't give juice right now on a regular basis, though; we haven't had to use it since she was six months old. I don't plan on giving it to her until she's older, though. Just a preference.??

  • Thanks ladies!  Looks like my Amelia Wink is getting some juice tonight... and hopfully mommy is getting a full diaper tomorrow!
  • Hopefully our Amelia decide to get things moving!

Also, I buy the Gerber baby applejuice. It doesnt have sugar and crap in it.

  • Since DD was only pooping once a week (no joke, and she's EBF) at her 4 month apt pedi told us to give her 1 oz prune juice mixed with 1 oz water once a day. Also since we were introducing cereal he told us to mix it with water, not BM or formula, to help with the pooping issues. These things have helped- she now poops about 3 times a week (and we don't always give her the prune juice every day, just if she hasn't gone in a couple of days).
  • oh and after that first 1.5oz of straight apple prune juice in 1.5 hrs later she filled up her diaper.  We now also mix her cereal with juice instead of bm.  Unfortunately it hasn't gotten better and she also gets 1tsp of Miralax every other day.
