Nurseries and Baby Gear

How much in the budget?

How much do you think you have spent (or do you plan to spend) on the nursery?  DH and I haven't found bedding we're 100% in love with, but I did find a mural that I LOVE, so I was thinking about buying it (its rather pricey), but decorating the WHOLE room around the mural.  It has lots of bright colors, so I could do solids, strips, gingham, polka dots in a hundred colors (obviously I'd just pick a few)... and it is gender neutral so I could buy it now and decide what accent colors to use later...

Here's the mural.  WDYT?  I was thinking it'd be cheaper to get this mural and then solid mix and match everything else than to get a bedding set that we can't actually use...

Re: How much in the budget?

  • I think that the budget amount just has to be something that you and DH are comfortable with. The amount you pick might be way too much for the next family but much less than another family spent.

I can say that we are spending probably way more than most do. It's our first child and we are over-doing it. We also are comfortable with the amount we have spent.

We had murals handpainted through out the room and then decorated around it.

I think the mural you picked in your link is very colorful and lively, your baby's eyes will love adjusting to it and looking at it. If it makes you happy and you feel comfortable with the price - then go for it!

  • I agree with PP that it is a personal choice. We are probably going a bit ove the top but have registered for our bedding, we had a terrible time agreeing on some! However our furniture is rather pricey. I think the mural is very cute & if you can stay within what ever amount the two of you are comfortable with then it sounds like a great idea. A lot of girls have posted about not going wiht sets & just getting sheets & a bedskirt instead. Good luck!

  • If I was at that stage already I could help you out. I'm wondering the same thing. DH and I just moved into our home in August, and we have an empty bedroom, which will be perfect for the nursery. Although, it needs new everything though. Looks like the previous owners punched a hole in the wall, and the paint was superman colors. No way ho-say. The carpet is old and stained, thats coming out too. Not sure if we will do hardwood or carpet just yet though. If we do hard wood, I want a nice shag rug to do in there.
  • We're keeping our budget pretty low.  I bought bedding on ebay and my mom is buying the crib for us.  Everything else furniture wise is stuff we had or I got at garage sales and we're painting white to make a "set". Our rocker was my husband's grandmothers.   I think total of what we're spending will be $200-300.

However, I really enjoy fixing up old furniture.  If you love the wall mural, I say go for it and keep everything else really simple.  I'd use white furniture and pick 1-2 colors for bedding and window tratments.

  • We set the budget at $1000...but I am not spending that unless I decide to go ahead & get the $600 glider (which would actually go in the living room).  I am not buying a new dresser & our crib was only $100 (actually $350 but had a $220 voucher & discount due to floor model).  We are painting on our own murals so only cost of paint.  We aren't doing a bedding "set"...just a crib sheet & maybe changing pad cover.  I want to buy a mobile & little area rug but not much else.

  • Thanks, ladies!  Our original budget was about $1000, when we thought we'd need EVERYTHING, so I'm sure we can swing it.  Dh LOVES the murals I've shown him... (I picked out a different one for a girl now) and thinks that the price is reasonable ($130 +S&H).  We are getting a dresser/changer that we will need to refinish or paint.  And I have a recliner (probably going in the living room- not the nursery) already... just needs a good steam cleaning.  We will have a twin bed in the room that will need bedding, and we'll need a crib (white for a girl, oak for a boy).  So, I THINK we can swing one or two REALLY nice things (crib, mural, maybe a high quality bookcase) and then inexpensive "stuff" in solid colors.  I'm SO excited that we have a more firm "idea" now...  And that we agree on it!  The bedding I'd looked at before I liked, but DH was just "Whatever you think, honey" and now he's EXCITED about the nursery since he has seen the murals... what a great start!  Just a few more months and I can put my plan into ACTION!  (DH wants to go crib shopping the first moment we're both home and know the gender... FINE WITH ME!)
