don't do it, there are so many safety standards as far as spacing, I called a custom furniture guy that built our bed room set and he said he wouldn't do it, to many risks.
What about a cradle, or a dresser, or something else, I would advise against a crib.
If you are dead set on it you can download plans online.
my friend at work is due in may and her dh is a contractor and he ordered plans online for like $11 and is almost done with it, she said it looks awesome!
You can order the plans online. As long as he knows what he is doing, it follows the dimensions standards and doesn't have any moving parts, I'm sure it would be fine. Half of the cribs out there are cheaply/ poorly constructed, but because they are commercially made people trust them. I would think that a handmade crib with superior craftsmanship would be safer than some cheap-o China crib.?
I would tend to agree with MrsAHoffman. There are lots of really good crib plans out there and if you follow the instructions carefully, you could end up with a fantastic crib of superior quality. For example, a place called americanwoodworker.com offers several different crib plans, and they also sell the hardware kits that match the different plans so you can build a gorgeous solid wood crib that also has drop-down front rails and adjustable positions for the mattress.
Most cribs you will find in the stores these days are made in China, and we all know what's been coming from that source lately.
