I just copied it from my blog so I apologize for it being so long! (disclaimer: I'm sure I spelled a lot of the medical things incorrectly)
Wednesday, March 11th
Started noticing back pain but figured it was because I had been sitting on the couch for the better part of a month and decided to ignore it.
Thursday, March 12thStill had back pain and by about noon it was to the point where I could hardly move. Didn't want to call OB because I knew he would send me to labor & delivery and I didn't want Friday the 13th babies! The pain became progressively worse throughout the day.
6:30PM - called OB and he sent us to L&D. At this point none of us thought it was labor but Jeff and I packed the hospital bag anyway.
7:15PM - We arrived at the hospital and had to wait in the hallway until a room was available. This was not fun as I was in a lot of pain but we were finally put into a room which was huge!
8:00PM - Our wonderful nurse Shannon set us up on all of the monitors to check the babies heartbeats and to monitor to see if I was having contractions. She also started an IV and did a cervix exam and determined that I was dilated to 2cm and 70% effaced.
10:30PM - A resident came and tried to do an ultrasound to determine the position of the babies. I told them that the babies had been head down 2 days ago but he was very unsure of himself and couldn't find the babies. Fortunately nurse Shannon, Jeff and I realized that he had no clue what he was doing and decided to wait for a real doctor!
11:00PM - Dr. Bishop (not sure who he is) came and did another ultrasound and found the babies in less than 30 seconds. He agreed with me that the babies were still head down.
11:45PM - The nurses did another cervical exam and found me to be 3cm dilated, 90% effaced and in a -2 position.
12:45AM - I was given Nubain (finally) to help with the back pain. Fortunately it worked very quickly.
At this point Jeff and I went to sleep for the night.
Friday, March 13th6:45AM - I had another cervical exam and am still dilated to 3cm, 90% effaced and in a -2 position.
8:05AM - My OB arrived and said that he is pretty sure I am not in labor and gave me a second round of the Nubain for my back pain. He wanted to keep me at the hospital a little while longer for monitoring and will most likely send me home with something for the pain.
9:58AM - I was given Percocet for the pain since Nubain is taken through IV and could not be sent home with me.
12:30PM - I vomited up the Percocet since I had not had anything to eat since dinner the night before. Of course my OB wants them to feed me and give me another Percocet to see if it is something they can send me home with.
2:00PM - I lost my mucus plug
2:17PM - Took another Percocet
3:40PM - Another cervix check. No change.
4:00PM - Went to the bathroom again and thought perhaps my water had broken. I was leaking red blood and wasn't sure if this was my waters breaking or something else. I was in a lot of pain at this point and needed help back to the bed from the bathroom.
4:45PM - A midwife was asked to come to do another cervical exam to see if what happened was my water breaking.
5:20PM - The midwife came and did the exam. She was not 100% sure if the waters had broken since it was difficult to tell around the blood. She did a cervical exam and determined that I was definitely in labor. I asked the nurse to call the OB for the epidural!
5:49PM - OB ordered 25cc of Demerol and said if there was no change in 10 minutes he would order the Epidural
7:20PM - The anesthesiologist came in and started my epidural. I was so relieved as I had been in tremendous pain since the blood started and wasn't sure how much more I could handle!
7:25PM - The OB came and did a cervical exam. I was now 5cm dilated and 100% effaced. He said everything looked good and had a scalp electrode but in to monitor Baby A (Parker).
8:30PM - The OB did another cervical exam. I was now 8cm dilated.
10:00PM - The OB gave me Potosin to induce contractions. He wanted to speed things up as he had some concerns about all the blood loss.
10:20PM - The OB did another exam and said that I was just about ready to go. Parker's head was very low
10:40PM - We were taken to the OR
11:00PM - I started pushing. I was given an apesiotomy because Parker was "sunny side up" as I like to call it. He was also sitting right on a nerve which made pushing difficult to focus on.
11:48PM - Parker Samuel was born weighing 5lbs. 6 oz., 18.5 inches long. We were worried that we were going to have 2 separate birthdays. Parker did not cry when he was born and was rushed in for the pediatrician to look at. The doctor started pulling out chunks of placenta. I had had a placental abruption.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placental_abruption11:53PM - Annabelle Kathryn was born weighing 5lbs. 7oz., 18 inches long. She gave a nice healthy cry.
11:58PM - Jeff spoke with the pediatrician. Because of the placental abruption Parker had lost a lot of blood and needed a blood transfusion. Parker also had a hemotoma on his head from the OB using suction to aid in pulling him out.
Jeff followed Annabelle to the transition nursery and got to play with her a little. They fed her 1/2 oz. of formula and burped her. She got the hiccups.
Parker was taken to the NICU after his transfusion. He was put into an incubator and hooked up to all sorts of monitors. He looked much better and was reacting better. He had to stay there a little while for monitoring.
Saturday, March 14th
Jeff and I went back to the laboring room for about 1.5 hours while they were preparing our postpartum room. On our way there we stopped by the NICU and transition nursery to visit Parker and Annabelle. They were able to share a room and the nurses said that when one would cry, so would the other!
We got to our PP room at about 3:30/4:00am.
5:00AM - Annabelle was dropped off to our room and she spent the night with us. We fed and changed her. She is having trouble breastfeeding but drinks very well from a bottle.
The rest of the day Saturday is a little bit of a blur. We spent the day with Annabelle and tried not to worry too much about Parker. I called the NICU several times during the day and the nurses were very nice about giving me status updates. The one nurse even called me to let me know that he was being released to the regular nursery! She also came to the room to let me know that he had been dropped off and as soon as they did their assessments they would bring him to me. Jeff had run home sometime Saturday so all I told him was that Parker was doing well. He was very pleasantly surprised when he came back and Parker and Annabelle were both lying on my chest!
The rest of the hospital stay is pretty uneventful. We were looking forward to being released on Monday but then my OB came to see me and realized that I had a lot of symptoms that can occur when you lose as much blood as I had lost. They ended up making us all stay another day so I could be given blood too. I weighed more after giving birth than I did when I went into the hospital. Because of the blood loss I was severely swollen and my blood pressure was through the roof. Fortunately the blood has helped but my BP remains high. For the time being I am still on bedrest (as much as that works with twins) to try to get my BP down.
Finally on Tuesday we were all released and are now home adjusting!
