would never use because they don't go well with your last name?
For me, this name is Isaac. I love it, and it is the name of my favorite late grandfather... but it just absolutely doesn't work with DH's long, Ukrainian last name! What a bummer...

Yes. Our last name has "or" in it, so all first names with "or" in it, and most with just a long o are not an option. I really like Georgia. But no go.
DH and I were just talking about this (yes, we talk about our phantom baby names). We love the name Grayson - but our last name is pronounced like Goose. Grayson Goose - Grey Goose - is that mean?
I am very Irish and have always loved a lot of Irish names. But our last name is very Swedish, ending in -berg and none seem to flow very well. So, we gave DS a Swedish name, which is also pretty mainstream American as well. Maybe I'm overthinking it, I don't know...
Yes. Our last name is 1 syllable and ends in -ess, so I tried to avoid any 1 syllable first names and anything that could rhyme with the last name. It definitely eliminated a few of our picks.
Yes... I LOVED the names Violet or Juliet for a girl, but our last name also ends with a "T" (sounds similar to Garrett). Just didn't sound right to me.
i don't get the whole, don't say your last name thing. our last name is smith, so we have to be very careful it doesn't sound fake. i would love to name my son after my dad who passed away in 2006, but i don't want to make my child be called john smith. my husband's name is don and he gets the fake name thing all the time. my son's middle name will be john, but we have to be careful on the first name we pick!
i wanted to name my son connor but connor john is backwards terminator and it sounds dumb

This reminds me of that epidode in Sex and the City where Samantha changes her boyfriends name to Smith Jarred. LOL
I have always loved the name "Allie" or "Ally" (short for Alison). Since Grey's Anatomy launched I liked Addison. But my new last name ends in "SON" which ruins those names and Carson, Jackson, Madison, etc.
Our last name begins with Schw.... and my first name is S, so if you say it out loud, I sound like I'm slurring and drunk. That definitely will affect the name we pick for our kid.

I have a very similar problem. Same deal with the Irish thing on my part, and my H is half-Italian (his mom's side), so he really likes Italian names. Unfortunately, our last name is VERY Danish (short name full of hard consonant sounds). Names that sound "ethnic" for any non-Scandinavian culture sound really silly with our last name, I think.
Yep! Our last name starts with "R", so we ruled out any first names that end in "R" - that's quite a few, and sad because I like a lot of the names in the -er/-or group.
I just don't like names where the first name ends with the same letter/sound that the last name begins with. I think they run together.
If our last name started with a different sound, we'd be naming our little one Parker.
Our last name is 2 syllables and ends in -ney ("-nee"). My first name is also 2 syllables and ends in the "-nee" sound and I hate how they sound together. So, we've eliminated all names that end in the "-ee" sound, which is A LOT of names - anything that ends in -y, -i, -ie, -ey, -ee are all out, including nicknames.
Absolutely. Actually most names don't go with our last name. Our last name is one syllable and sounds really dumb with one syllable first name. You'd be surprised at how many names are one syllable even with Matthew, people will call him Matt (one syllable) and Elizabeth (Beth- one syllable). SO ANNOYING! That's why we are leaning toward Caleb, Leah and Sarah even though they are not my favorite names.?

I'm Swedish too and my maiden name was Lundberg! I miss it sometimes
Our last name starts with an S, so a lot of names that end in S don't sound right with it. It makes the S in our last name hard to hear so then people think it's not there (it doesn't help that the other part of our ln could be a name in itself without the S). Also, our last name is one syllable and sounds very blunt so one syllable first names don't sound right.
Re: More on last names: do you have names that you like but
Christian and Max are both names I could never ever use due to our last name.
Can't use any names of flowers for girls.
And can't really use anything ending in -er.
Yes!

Yes. Mackenzie. I always said I wanted a girl with this name but then married a last name Mc..........
My new last name is Sloss. I loved the name Carter and Cole but both names would be made fun of... Tarter Sloss and Cole Sloss, ha ha..
Tarter Sloss and Cole Sloss really craked me up...sounds like a great combo for twins if you ask me!
We can't use anything that ends in -ine. I've always like the name Caroline, but that would be way too many -ines.

It makes me very sad.
