TTC after 35

In the spirit of keeping the conversation going

What do you do for a living and how did you end up in that field? SAHMs welcome, I think that is a fabulous job!

Me - I work for a financial services company as a project manager and a process architect/improvement specialist. I've been with that company for 11 years now.  I heard about the job through a friend and applied as a sales rep. After 2 years I became a manager and the got into some project work working more as a business owner / business analyst then my role just shifted and I ended where I am today.  Not too exciting of a story but hey not too bad for a communications major in college.

Oh and I can't post from work that is why I post in the evenings.

Re: In the spirit of keeping the conversation going

  • I am currently a SAHM thanks to my DH having a good job with a decent salary and the big boy pictured below.

Prior to this I was an elementary school teacher teaching 4th grade.  I had always wanted to be a teacher since 2nd grade, so that's the path I took through college.  After getting out of college I ended up teaching 4th grade my first year, 1st grade for 10 years, 2nd grade for 2 years, 3rd grade for 1 year and then finally teaching 4th grade for that last year before staying home.

  • Great idea for a thread!

My DH and I both work in high tech. I've been in this field since 1995. I'm getting a little tired of the industry, but the pay is good and my mortgage is huge, so I'm not going anywhere anytime soon.

  • I am a nurse, I work for a transitional care center. ?I was a SAHW/M for almost 3 years.

Not too exciting either but what can I say.?

  • I am the CEO of a Communications/PR firm. I love what I do, and business is very good.

(About now I should be knocking on wood. Sometimes I think my head should do nicely for this purpose.)

    HA!

  • I am a writer. Both a journalist and a novelist.

I started at 16 as an intern at the local paper. By 30, I was the regional editor of that paper. Today, I freelance for a larger paper, part of a major media chain, and have written three books. I love what I do.

    A writer! Good stuff.

BTW, that DS of yours is adorable!

  • I am a Registered Nurse. After working in oncology for 8 years, I went to work for the family business. It is a pharmacy with medical equipment. I have been there for 12 years now full time and have worked there for 23 years if you include part time. We are busy and I love my job.

"Onward"--CathyMD Waiting since 07/5/2011 for our forever child! Yep we are adopting!
  • I am in client relations/marketing for a local appraisal/title mgmt company. I love my job and the mid-size company I work for. We are actually very busy contrary to what you hear on the news.

  • I do outreach and education/marketing for a gov't  office. It is exactly as exciting as it sounds. I would love to find a new job closer to home but I stay here for now for a) good infertility benefits and b) the dream of using FMLA which requires you to have been at your job for a year.

I would love to be a SAHM but I'm not a mom (yet) and DH is a teacher and I have become accustomed to the finer things in life ;-).

  • Wow, there are some really successful ladies on this board. You girls rock!
  • I am a real estate agent and I love my job, although it isn't easy these days.  After college, I went to law school and practiced law for a couple of years, but I hated it and decided to make a career change.  I had always wanted to sell real estate, but worried about working in an all commission job.  I had some money saved up and decided to give it a try for 6 months to see if it could work for me.  Here I am still selling real estate 10 years later!

What kind of books have you written?

  • I am a writer, too.

I've spent most of my career working for newspapers, starting with a small daily in Central PA, and then on to Rochester, NY; Ft. Lauderdale, Fla; and finally, Philly.

I was laid off (occupational hazard these days) two years ago in January, and went through this emotional upheaval, because I thought I'd retire from the newspaper biz.

But now I work mostly from home, still writing news, but now for a website, and also doing a regular feature for the paper I was laid off from. I have the best work/life balance I've ever had in my life, and wouldn't change a thing.

  • Human resources for a small manufacturing firm in Ohio.  I was supposed to be a nanny for my best friend's sister (who runs this company)  She didn't want me to find another job before she went back to work so she hired me to do HR assistant job till then.  She gave me the option of staying at the company (with benefits) or becoming the nanny (no benefits)... Guess which I chose....  15 years later I'm the HR Mgr.  But, if I get preggo, DH says I can stay home. Yea!

    I'll be the underachiever!

I worked at one of the Big 3 as an administrator but was laid off. So now I'm taking advantage of a program Michigan offers which helps pay for school.  I will be going back hopefully in the summer. I'd like to go sooner but there's a process you have to follow and I don't think I'll  be through it in any sooner.

I will be going back for early childhood education.

  • That's not underachieving!

Underachieving is having 2 Master's degrees and working as a glorified secretary. And doing it badly- like me.

I was a Recreation Therapist for 15 years working with traumatic brain injury patients and children with developmental disabilities. I stopped working to finish grad school and now I'm taking a little time off in between. My DH is also in healthcare and we would go 1-2 weeks without seeing each other sometimes, so it's nice to spend quality time together.

  • I work as a marketing assistant for an agricultural organization.  I kind of fell into this industry.  I was unhappy at my job at a software company about 7 years ago (I was hired for marketing, but basically was the office manager/receptionist, and I would do nothing all day until the boss dumped "urgent" work on me at 4:30pm and I had to stay late to finish it), so I started answering want ads from the newspaper.  One of them was for an agricultural company, and they hired me as a marketing assistant.  I was there a couple of years and then moved to this organization after I got an offer I couldn't refuse!

I like my job.  It's a laid back environment, and I'm rarely stressed out.  I only work 35 hours a week, and I think I'm pretty efficient because I usually have extra time to surf the internet during the day! Heh! I'd love to be a SAHM if we could afford it.  But, for now, the plan is for me to keep working.

I probably shouldn't laugh but you're response make me giggle.

I really mean that I was underachieving because I was unemployed.

  • I am an attorney with my own firm. Every since I was little and successfully negotiated trading rooms with my brother, I realized the power of persuasion. After a few years in consulting after undergrad, I went to law school. I love it but am also branching off into being a mediator. When we have a kid, I will be part time for a little while and then continue our tradition of a very kid friendly office.
  • Hello ladies! I typically post on the TTTC board but come here sometimes since I'm also over 35. I am on my second career and work as a Children's Librarian. My bachelor's degree is in PR but I didn't find it all that fun or interesting and realized that I needed a change. I went back for my Master's degree, yes, you have to have a Master's degree to be a Librarian. Some days don't feel like work though and can be really fun. Right now I do storytimes for babies which is sometimes a bit painful. Nothing worse than being surrounded by cute smiling babies when you are going on cycle 21! This job has taught me a lot about the kind of parenting style I want to have. It never ceases to amaze me how parents can go on the computer to use the internet and then get angry when their toddler won't sit still for longer than a few minutes beside them.
  • It is so fun learning more about my fellow over 35ers! I am an elementary school teacher. I have been teaching for 13 years. I started out in 2nd grade, went to third for one year, and got "promoted" to 4th. I've been in 4th for the last three years. I love my summers and vacations, but hate the beauracracy of school and No Child Left Behind. I also HATE the stupid standardized tests that we have to give.

I know. We think we'll keep him.

And as long as we're at it, he's a big fan of your dogdogdogdog.

  • I work at a Student Health Center for a University....I love working on a college campus, the summers are great, not too many students around, and we get two weeks off at the holidays!

My DH also works for a University....so we have NCAA Bball fever going on right now in our house.  EXCEPT, we work for competing Universities!  Go Blue (Carolina that is!)

  • I'm a little late to this post I'm a registered nurse also and I work for a large previously county run level one trauma and burn center we get and take. all kinds of patients from all walks of life. Its awesome and a little strange sometime but I love it. I've worked practically everywhere in this hospital ER ICU med/surg telemetry. I must also say that the smartest thing I've ever done was get my degree in nursing. One of the few mostly recession proof jobs out there and am thankful to God everyday for the knowledge he gave me to be able to do this job.
