Trying to Get Pregnant

All PNV are not created equal

https://pregnancy.emedtv.com/prenatal-vitamins/the-best-prenatal-vitamins.html

This gets asked a lot so I thought I would post this.  Above is a link to an article on what to look for in PNV.

I also found this on WebMD:

Are All Prenatal Vitamins the Same?

No, they're not. Look for one that contains approximately:

  • 4,000 and 5,000 IU (international units) of vitamin A
  • 800 and 1,000 mcg (1 mg) of folic acid
  • 400 IU of vitamin D
  • 200 to 300 mg of calcium
  • 70 mg of vitamin C
  • 1.5 mg of thiamine
  • 1.6 mg of riboflavin
  • 2.6 mg of pyridoxine
  • 17 mg of niacinamide
  • 2.2 mcg of vitamin B12
  • 10 mg of vitamin E
  • 15 mg of zinc
  • 30 mg of iron

I take the Women's One a Day, which is right in line with the above chart.  I take it before dinner and I don't feel any side effects.

Hope this helps!

Re: All PNV are not created equal

  • When doing my research I found that chart. I also found that other sources say you need more calcium than 200-300mg and keep in mind that list does not have omegas on it either.

  • The Women's One a Day PNV comes with an Omega supplement.  Thanks!
  • Interesting. I just looked at my Target PNVs, and they're pretty similar. If it's not the recommended, it's higher (except for iron, which is 2mg lower). It doesn't list pyridoxine, but it's in the ingredients.

  • my PNV only has 300mg of Calcium.  My endocrinologist told me that ALL women should be taking 1000mg's of calcium daily!  So, in addition to my pnv, I take 2 500mg calcium chews daily.

FYI - Pyridoxine is the chemical name for B6.

Well that is awesome, because then the target prenatals are good! It's a little lower in the iron, but I'm sure I make up more than enough in actual food.
