I need bra-advice.

I bought 2 new bras when I was at 12 weeks, as I'd gone up from a 32D to a 34DD. Now my 34DD's are too tight... and the underwire is getting a little diggy. I know that at 27 weeks it's too early to anticipate what size I'll be for a nursing bra.

What do I do? I prefer underwires just b/c of the shape - most of my boobs are on the side and it helps to put 'em where I want 'em :) but I know that underwires can be bad for developing milk ducts. I paid about $60 per bra for the ones I'm wearing now in order to get ones where they really fit and the underwire was well padded.

Do I shell out another $60 to get me through the next 2-3 months? Or should I look for a non-underwire at this point? Or should I just get a nursing bra and hope for the best?

Re: I need bra-advice.

  • Honestly -- I would get fitted again and get non-underwire.  I did this (at Nordies in Bell Square) and told them I was pg.  They fitted me in a great and inexpensive bra without wires.  The girl also had me go up one band size and put it on the tightest setting so I could let it out as the girls grew (it saved me from buying new bras).  This is the opposite of what you usually do with new bras (usually you go on the outside setting and work your way in as the elastic gets lose).

I would wait until your milk comes in before getting nursing bras.

  • I was told that underwire isnt a problem as long as the bra fits. I got a couple bras from Ross/ Target near the end and really liked them for what they cost. I wouldnt get nursing bras yet, b/c you will still go up a size after your milk comes in, or maybe just get one for now. Motherhood online I found had good styles for pretty good price.

  • i bought a S/M/L stretchy seamless nursing bra at pea in the pod for $38 and it seems like that's all i use now!!  its so comfy and it stretches with the growing bust so i'm not constrained to a certain size.  i even use it as an exercise bra - and i love how it has a light padding and i dont nip out. :)

also check with your hospitals lactation clinics - they might have bras for sale.  i was just at evergreen hospital yesterday and they had at least 8 different types of bras that felt super comfy so i bought 1 and will buy a few more once the milk comes in.  they were fairly inexpensive too - i think they ranged from $19.99-$39.99.

  • ARe the cups too small or just the band?  YOu can buy a bra expander thing that's like extra hooks to give you a few more inches.  That helped me a lot!

I wore non-underwires for so long after Ben was born, I can't even begin to wear wires again... they just dig into me now.   I found some GREAT ones I love and of course they've been discontinued now.  So I'm back up a creek.

  • I just went and bought a cheap, ugly bra that was big enough - especially in the band to adjust during pregnancy.  I have thrown it away since delivering DD.  After DD was born I wore the nursing tanks and a few stretchy sleeping nursing bras.  I just went and got fitted for a good quality nursing bra with an underwire (they told me if it fit well it was ok...they better be right!) to wear when I go back to work.  But when I'm at home I still just wear tanks. I wouldn't spend alot yet because the band will be too big to wear after delivery.
