Pregnant after major abdominal surgery?

With the exception of past c-sections, is anybody pregnant after undergoing major abdominal surgery? How are you dealing with the scar tissue/adhesions as your belly grows?

 TIA!

Re: Pregnant after major abdominal surgery?

  • I didn't have MAJOR surgery, but I did have my gal bladder removed last year and I have several small scars that are stretched to maximum capacity. I lotion them daily with a vitamin E lotion, but they are very itchy and uncomfortable. I have had nightmares of them splitting open....ewwwww.

  • I also had my gall bladder out about 9 months ago, but I dont think the scars have changed yet. Not looking forward to it!

  • I had a bowel resection 7 months before getting preg. with my DS and it was fine. The scar was itchy, but I never had the feeling it was going to "pop" or anything. Good luck!
  • I've been wondering this same exact thing!  What kind of surgery have you had? I had to have my entire large intestine removed for my first surgery. My scar runs from a couple inches below my bra to my pubic bone and another scar is about three inches long perpendicular to the big one on my lower right abdomen. My second surgery had an incision the same length as my first but they didn't follow the same scar all the way down so I have a little spot where the second scar has its own path away from the first and then rejoins it. My RE thinks that adhesions are the reason for my infertility. I have heard from other women who have adhesions/scar tissue in the abdomen that it can be painful when they get stretched. My hope is that maybe after getting pregnant they will get so stretched, or maybe even broken, that I'll be able to get pregnant with #2 much easier.

Misinformation- It sounds as though we may have had the same surgery. At least in the same ballpark. My scar runs from right under my sternum to right above my pubic bone. It's the entire length of my abdomen. The only reason for the surgery to affect my fertility, would be the adhesions, which I know I have. I can feel them. I'm just hoping my tubes aren't blocked. DH and I are on cycle #6 with no luck yet. I think I'll give myself another 2 months before heading to see a RE.

Even though I worry about the scar stretching(and popping open! gross), the way the adhesions will break apart and stretch is what concerns me most. I hope it's not as bad as I think it will be!

  • I am suffering. I had abdominal surgery 05/08. My scar runs from my sternum along my ribcage about 7 inches. I had my adrenal gland removed which is right above my kidney The scar tissue and muscle are very tender and don't get my started when the baby kicks that area.  It feels like someone is stabbing me then punching me after.  I am not even in the biggest months yet.
