I prefer Colum, but it's a good name, regardless. The Callum spelling lends itself to the nickname Cal (like the beginning of calorie), even though the actual name doesn't have the same A sound, and I really hate that nn.

It does have the same sound, it is not pronounced Colum but Cal-lum

I've never heard anyone pronounce it Cal-lum. It's Call-um (like "call on the telephone"). Colum is a more traditional spelling, because the name comes from the Irish saint Columba (male), which is from the Latin for dove.

In the UK, where I would imagine the name is more common than here, it is in fact pronounced Cal-lum.

Aha! I bet that's where our difference is coming from. The handful of Callums/Colums I know are all Irish, and might give you a black eye if you thought they were from the UK.

I've always heard it pronounced Kal-um (the beginning is pronounced the same as Calla lilies).
It is becoming a popular name on the East coast where I am, and everyone I've known with this name pronounces it this way. I'm pretty sure it is pronounced this way in countries with a British pronunciation as well.
I thought of Cal-um and didn't make any connection to Columba. I just want to say, as I did with another name, that even if you live an area where its fairly common and everyone will get how to pronounce it, you may not always live there nor may your child. Obviously you can't plan for everything, like moving to a different country, but just because people get it MA doesn't mean they could get it in VA. I like Columba but not the shortened Colum sound, just not my style.
I had a little boy in my preschool class last year with the name Callum. Sweetest little boy ever and really cute. It's not on my list, but I like the name )
And for the record, his mom lived in England and his was pronounced Cal-lum as in the nickname Cal.
Don't listen to these people, it is a great name. It is one of the most popular names here in Australia and it always pronounced Cal-um (NOT column). It is a good, strong name.
Re: What do you think of this name?
I would guess that it is pronounced Cal lum with 2 syllables. I like teh way it looks actually but it does make me think of Calcium.

The boy's name Calum c(a)-lum is pronounced KAL-um. It is of Scottish and Gaelic origin. Variant of Columba (Latin) "dove".
Perhaps it can be pronounced both ways.

Sounds like a brand of foot powder.
I would pronounce it Cal-um unless I was told differently.?
