Baby Names

locked down a girl name

So we are sure yet what gender we are having but we have decided on the perfect girl name, so if its a boy, we will have to start over, but that'd be okay.

My hubby is Irish so we wanted to pass that along to our first baby.

Aoife - pronounced EEF-A

Name associated with an Irish Legend who was a warrior queen.

Re: locked down a girl name

  • It's very pretty!. Do you live somewhere that has a lot of Irish heritage? If not, I think it might be mispronounced a lot. I actually had no idea how to pronounce Aiofe until now. It breaks all the rules of English pronunciation!

  • Good luck with that.  It's pretty, but very tricky.  I knew an Aiofe once.  I misspelled her name all the time.  I could never get it right.  She was listed in my phone book under "E."
  • Pretty name in pronunciation but a lifetime of spelling issues.  I like that you are incorporating your DH's heritage.
    Married in 2008 - DD born in 2010 - EDD 6.15.2012!
  • Sigh. I love this name, but no one will be able to pronounce it. It isn't even remotely pronounced how it is spelled and will just be so confusing. Please don't do this to your daughter unless you live in Ireland.

  • I love this name, but FI won't have it :(  My name is a very hard to pronounce Irish name, and while I hated it growing up, I absolutely love it now. So I think its fine to do this to her.

    Agreed.

  • I think it looks and sounds pretty, but I wouldn't be able to look at it and know how to say it!  At the same time, its different enough it should stand out in peoples mind when she has to tell them how to spell it or pronounce it.  My name is a variation of a not so common name (but common enough) and since its so close to that other name I'm always telling people how to say it and spell it and they continually get it wrong (co-workers for at least the first week, profs, new friends etc).  I dont' know if they think if they get it close enough I won't mind or something....  Anyway, If you're going with a different name, I say make it really different!  And Aoife certainly is!

  • May like it now but your daughter will be explaining how to pronounce her name her entire life. Definitely won't have any girls with the same name in her class though...

  • Agree with pp about the spelling and pronunciation problems. . . if that is not a concern for you (you don't care), then go for it. :)
  • Wow. Horrible name.

    Impossible to spell.

    Impossible to pronounce.

    The pronounciation isn't even pretty.

    The meaning is horrific.

  • I think that is possibly the WORST name I have ever heard of!  Sorry, and the spelling...WOW!  I thought the name was Oi-fee.  Please, do not name your child this!  If you want an Irish name, please pick another one!!!!!

  • Think about her luck with college admissions and future employers. ?Do you think someone will call to interview her if they have no clue how to pronounce it? ?I'm not so sure she'd get a chance.....and she'll always be explaining it. ?

I respect the fact you want a traditional Irish name, but no one else will know or understand that....and I think she'll get shafted in the process.

  • It's a beautiful name, but no one will be able to pronounce it. Most people in America are not Irish nor do they have any idea on Irish pronunciation. If people can screw up "Leah" I can guarantee that Aoife will be even harder.

How about a nice Irish name that is easier to pronounce?

  • Please don't do this!  She will be forever spelling and pronouncing her name.  For her entire life.  Unless you live in Ireland, don't do this...

There are some really pretty Celtic girls' names that I love (LOVE Siobhan, Deirdre, etc.) but would avoid due to the complicated spelling/pronounciation issues.

Take it from someone who has always had to spell her name out... and my name is really common, just a name that's spelled about four ways...  Don't do it!!

If you absolutely adore this name and can't not use it, use it as a middle name.

  • Why not name her Eva? It sounds essentially the same, but she won't have a lifetime of trouble with her name. Give her a classic Irish middle name. Aiofe is just bad. Sorry.

I'm sorry, but I must agree. I have done this before, in fact. I would be too embarrassed to call someone for an interview if I had no idea how to say their name. Aiofe doesn't look anything like "eee-fa" it looks like Ay-Ohf or Eye-ohf to me. I'd never, ever say it correctly if I had a hundred tries.

If you like the sound of Eee-fa why not go with Eva and use an Irish middle name?
