I need some help!

Blake is still in the hospital and I don't know if I am over reacting but I swear he is getting worse.  I have my own thermometer with me and I took his temperature with that and it was 104.6. I went and told the nurse and she came in abou 5 mins later and got a temp of 101.2 with her own thermometer. I just feel that is not right he is BURNING up and will not eat or drink anything.  I have a gut feeling that something is not right but I don't know where to go. We are currently in the observation area at Mary Bridge and have only seen a Dr. one time today.  I don't know what else to do and I don't know if I can demand more tests but I feel that they need to do more to find out what is wrong with him. I know I am rambling but I just don't know what to do and I want my baby better.

Re: I need some help!

  • Ask, demand, plead. You are his momma and his best advocate. Be the squeaky wheel, so to speak. Ask the nurse, why the difference in temps? Call your regular pedi and ask if s/he would make a hospital visit.

Hugs to you and hang in there. Feeling helpless is just about the worse feeling when it comes to your kids.

  • Take him to Harborview my husband is working trauma tonight.

No but seriously plead, ask for another nurse to take the temp, rectally, by the ear...

  • Just stay on top of the nurses and tell them you want a doctor to see your kid.   If they say no, ask why, tell them you're not going to leave them alone til a doc comes.   And tell them that you have you own thermometer and you want to know why the difference.   I agree with the pp that they should do it a few different ways if you think they're not right.

You know your kid.  And if he's still burning up, ask for help.   Are they giving him tylenol or anything??

Just make a nuisance of yourself and get what you need.  Better that those nurses think you're a pain in the ass than they miss something.

  • Ask for the number for the "Rapid Response Unit". That's the number for parents to call if you feel that the your child is getting worse. When Nathan was at Mary Bridge, I came close to calling this number (in my case, I was overreacting). If you call a team including doctors will come in asap to access him. You are in my prayers!

  • Take him to the ER at Children's.  I don't mess around with local hospitals...my family has learned the hard way.  We go straight to the UWMC when something happens.  I hope you get some help!  You guys are in my thoughts.

  • If it were me I would demand they transfer him to childrens in seattle, only because I have experience with them and they are rated among the top 15 childrens hospitals in the country  Honestly we went through all the docs at overlake and they even told us wrong dosages!   Also I would probably get another thermometer to double check the one you brought.  Ask to speak to a Dr asap!

  • Not sure if the rapid response is available in the observation unit. We were admitted to the children's ward, and saw signage in the room about it.
  • Thanks for all of the advice. My DH got here and demanded we talk to a Dr and a new nurse and things are better. He got some Motrin and his fever broke. I hope that he keeps getting better. Thanks for all of the help, you ladies are great.
