Ultrasound at 5w3d?

The ultrasound tech didn't say much of anything during my vag ultrasound today, but I saw a little round circle (appeared empty), but couldn't tell for sure. What should I have seen today?

I had an early ultrasound because I started having red spotting yesterday...still going tonight. Also had a blood draw this afternoon to check betas.

Re: Ultrasound at 5w3d?

  • I had an ultra sound around the same date. The dr said he could barely see the beginning of a sack.

    I did beta's today.

  • The tech didn't say anything about what was on the screen? Do you have to talk to your doctor to get the results?

I think I would go crazy!! I think around that time you'll see what looks like an empty circle with a teeny little thing off to one side of it. I googled 5 week ultrasounds and saw lots of images earlier.

GL to you. I have an ultrasound on Friday and I will be 51/2-6 weeks at that time So I will probably be looking at the same thing you did. I hope everything is ok!

  • I had an early u/s because of spotting.  Isn't it frustrating that the tech can't tell you anything?  I wasn't even able to see the screen, but even if i could, I wouldn't know what was what.

Did your doctor not call you with the results?  I stayed at the clinic until the doctor called me to explain.

  • At least you could see the black hole.  I was spotting and went in for an u/s around 5 weeks and they couldn't find anything.  He said, "you're pregnant, I just don't know where."  Then I was sent home and had to go back at 6 weeks.  It had finally developed, and we could see a little flicker at 6 weeks.  My blood came back normal though so don't worry.  You are still very early.

Unfortunately my ultrasound was at the end of the day, and my doctor is in another building across town. They said I should hear back tomorrow. I was beyond frustrated that she didn't tell me anything while we were in there. I'm sitting there, scared to death, holding DH's hand, and she takes a whole bunch of pictures, leaves for awhile to ask the radiologist if she "got everything," and then came back to tell me I could get dressed. I wanted to ask her, but I assumed she would tell me if she could.

They wouldn't let me see the screen either and the tech wasn't allowed to say anything.  Drove me nuts and she took forever, which was ok with me b/c that means she was being thorough. My bf was looking at the screen the whole time and sometimes made funny faces at what he was seeing.  At the end, he said "well it looks to me like you've got an alien in there!"  lol  That helped me relax and made me laugh.

  • I wouldn't worry, that's really early to see anything.

I had an early u/s last week for bleeding. On Monday (at 6w5d) they couldn't see anything, and then on Friday we saw the baby and the heartbeat! But the baby was measuring small, 6 days behind what I thought, so it's no wonder we couldn't find anything on Monday.

  • That little round empty thing is probably the yolk sack. It's what nourishes the baby till the placenta grows and takes over that duty.
  • That sounds right. All there is at that point is a yolk sac. In my baby bio (link in siggy) I have an u/s pic from .. I think it was also 5w3d... w/ DD. Just a yolk sac. Then a week later, I went back and there was the perfect little h/b and baby in there! :)
