BP - How high is too high?

So I've been having super high blood pressure and am monitoring it at home. Today it was 145/120. I know that isn't good, but how high does it need to be to call the Dr?

The last time I went in I saw the practitioner and she is a total idiot. She didn't give me ANY info!

Re: BP - How high is too high?

  • That's too high. My doc would NOT be happy. I would call them and let them know. They will track your BP and see if it's increasing or decreasing. It can take awhile. I'm being watched. It's normal for now but my doctor expects it to spike at some point.

  • Thats pretty high, IMO. If I were you, I'd call the after-hours line and let them know you weren't told when to call but you are worried about your last reading.?

Hope you're laying down and taking it easy!!?

  • Oh and you need to track your sodium. Many people have no idea that they are consuming twice the daily recommended sodium and that can make your BP worse.
  • I would call that in.  The bottom number (diastolic) seems very high.  I hope you are feeling well!
  • Although that is high, it's really dependent on what your "norm" is.  Make sure you take that into consideration.  The Dr really should have given you some parameters to use as a guideline.  Good luck!
  • I had an earlier post about this.  Mine was 150/100 today at the doctor.  I am also monitoring at home and it's now 128/84.  I know it's just because I was at the doctor, and I have "white coat syndrome".  But they still want to keep an eye on me.

I would call your doc, you're seems a little higher than mine even - the bottom number at least.

  • should it get higher than 130's/90's thats high. in any case. pregnant or not. you really need to call ur dr if its that high.
  • I had white coat syndrome too at my first appt. She gave me an internal and THEN took my BP dumbass. Anyway, I keep showing proteins in my urine and I've settled down to normal but still - they are vigilant.
  • It's really odd to me that they are having you monitor at home but didn't give you any parameters to call with.  Re-take your BP and call, and when they call you back ask for specific parameters that you should be calling for.  It's silly that they didn't give you that to start with!

Yeah they take my blood pressure first which is dumb.  I tell them to take it after my ultrasound, and exam and all that.  And as long as everything goes will with those, my BP is usually fine.  But now I think I'm so freaked about the high blood pressure that it's making it even higher!

Yeah they were hoping that is what it was, but 3 appts later it is still way up.  Especially since my previous was usually around 116/80. I also have proteins in my urine. So yours all returned to normal?

  • I'd call your doctor with those numbers. Better safe than sorry.

And I also suffer from "white coat syndrome" and my regularly low/normal blood pressure (110/70) shot to 140/80 at early OB visits.  The nurse was all "that's too high" but my doctor was more relaxed due to the 80 diastolic number (normal). It settled down as I got more confident in the pregnancy and I was 119/73 today.

  • BP shouldnt that high, you should deff go in
  • Definitely too high.  Systolic is okay, but the diastolic (lower) is way too high.  I would call your OB just to be safe.
