NBR: Am I about to do something stupid?

For several months now I've been considering quiting my job and getting a part-time job that would allow me to be a part-time stay at home mom (I know -- bad timing considering the economy).

Last week my employer threw a wrench in the works: they want to eliminate my job (department lead) and move me into the supervisor position as a cost saving measure. I met with my boss and her boss and they are basically offering me an insulting compensation package with no negotiation and I know that I'm being taken advantage of because of my age, although they're using the economy as an excuse. Even though it means I'm probably going to loose my job, I'm going to turn it down (again my bad timing).

I plan on telling them that I would like to keep my current job but leave the door open if they want to try again at offering me better compensation. It means that I may get laid off in a few months and right now we are planning on buying a house by the end of the summer. I know that I could easily get a job in accounting if I needed to (I worked as an accounting assistant the whole 6 years I was in college).

So am I about to do something really stupid? Am I just being a selfish baby? I just know that I wouldn't feel good about myself taking this job and taking more time away from my family for unfair pay.

Sorry that was long (I'm at home sick today - I've got the time).

  • Nope I think that your on the right track!  You shouldn't take a position with more work and less pay in the end you will be really miserable! Stick to your guns, if they lay you off you have options.  But chances are they don't want to train a new person for your position so its easier to offer you something more reasonable!

  • If you're in a financial position where it would be OK if you did get laid off, even if it took a while to find another job, then no, I think you're doing the right thing, especially if it means longer hours and you're trying to go to less.

I think you should think about pushing up your house buying though so that you have a job when you're getting approved for loans.

  • Yes and no.  What pp said and... It's risky, but it sounds like a better move.  If you turn down the "promotion" and they lay you off you are eligible for unemployment.  That gives you a bit of time to find something you want to do.  You will probably be able to find part time easier than full time b/c places don't have to pay benefits, then, so it may be easier searching than if you wanted a FT position.

I think the timing with wanting buy a house is potentially problematic, but are you willing to push that back a few months if necessary?

  • If you can get ahold of the most recent ParentMap magazine (that free one) I just today read an article by a mom who in this bad economy quit her job to stay home. I think it's called "slow parenting in a slow economy" or something like that. It was really interesting, you might appreciate it's point of view.

    Good luck!?

Great article pearly, thanks for pointing it out.

  • No, I think you're making the right choice. ?I know that, if it were me, I'd totally resent being underpaid, especially if I wanted to work only P/T anyway.

FWIW, I am so, so glad I decided to work only part time. ?I turned down a raise and a promotion and had to find a new job, but it was totally worth it. ??
