Average cost of hospital stay for delivery

My husband and I are on an 80/20 plan at work and we're trying to get an idea of how much an average hospital stay for delivering a baby is these days so we can start saving. I know it depends on if there are complications, c-section, ect, but we're just looking for a ballpark figure for an average delivery/stay. Thanks!

Re: Average cost of hospital stay for delivery

  • I think most people will say there is no average, but you can ballpark between everyone's experiences.

I had blue cross blue shield with a 2k out of pocket then 100% coverage. So we only paid 2000 but from the very first doctor visit, 3 ultrasounds, lab work, switching primary physician, to being discharged but our grand total was over 40k!!!

    ?

Crazy!! But I was in the hospital for 4 days, was on meds during labor, then got an epidural, then had to have a c-section --more meds, another anesthesia bill:) ?The c-section alone was something like 20k. I then had complication after I went home and ended back in urgent care, then the ER then the clinic, so I have an additional 3k from that.

?Hope that helps. Also, do not be scared. Some women have a c-section and its way less. It is such a case by case basis.

  • It was a little over $10,000 for me.  I had a third nighti n there because I checked in before midnight on Monday and went home Thursday.  I also had an epi.

    DD's was about $2,600.

  • Mine was very standards- spent two nights in hospital (checked in at midnight), epi- just under $10,000.

  • Do you have an OOP max? We knew what our OOP max for the year was and saved that because we knew it wouldn't be more. Of course we ended up having to switch insurances when DH lost his job in my 6th month, but it still all worked out. The biggest bill was from DD's time in the NICU (a completely unexpected expense) so we were glad to have the entire OOP max saved even though we wouldn't have hit it with an uncomplicated delivery.
  • Our insurance was 90/10 with $3500 out of pocket max caps per year.

For my first baby, I had a c-section and our total bills came to almost $50K but only had to pay the $3500 max.

With #2, I had a VBAC and the total bills came to about $28K, so I only had to pay $2800. (only, ha!)

That was total before insurance.  My insurance covers all maternity costs and delivery.  I had to pay $100 of my hospital stay and $100 for DDs hospital stay.
