If you have/had a late (after 2.5) potty trainer..

When did it eventually happen?

DD is very resistant to PTing and I don't want to push her too much.  However she's in that defiant stage where most things are "no".  I'm wondering if I should just put her in underwear and sort of make it happen.  She's ready in every other way.

  • My DS turned 3 last August, and wasn't PT'd until January of this year.

  • I tried at 2.4 months and DD wasn't having it and actually asked for her diapers back. I tried again 2 months later because she started to poop only on the potty herself. I was home for a week in December and just kept her in underwear. We talked a lot about the transition leading up to December, I kept telling her when I was home with her there would be no more diapers and she'd wear big girl underwear.

  • Mia is 2yrs 7mos and is just finishing now. She's been showing signs for a while but it wasn't until recently that she voluntarily wanted to sit on the potty or started asking to sit. We tried undies for MOST of this weekend and she only had 1 accident. I still am giving her more time though because she tends to want a pull up over undies from time to time.

I was so unsure about every little sign she gave and whether I should push her. Looking back, she needed a little nudging, but I'm so glad I just waited for her to be ready. It was less stress on all of us.

  • I am not even going to start trying until after he's 2.5. We don't own a potty seat or toilet ring.

If she's resistant, I'd leave it until she's not.

  • We had the same problem. DD was 2 in August. Refuesd to go near the potty. One morning she put on big girl panties and that was it! Jan 2nd she started going on the potty. She has only had 2 accidents since and it wasnt even her fault.

My niece is the same age. Her parents pushed her! She still has a lot of accidents.

  • She'll be 3 in a month.  I'll let you know when it happens.
  • I tried when dd was just over 2.  She wasn't into it at all.  About 2 months before her third b-day we tried again, and she was trained in a day.  She had accidents here and there, but mostly with the sitter because she would get too busy too remember to go.  She turned 3 in November, and we literally just started to put her in underwear at night about a week ago.  She woke up dry for about 2 months...but I was scared! She is very, very proud of herself.  I think it helps that she is old enough to understand what the praise is for.
  • I haven't started yet but I am going to wait until she shows more signs.

I don't think after 2.5 is late either.... my pedi said the average age for a girl is 3 and for a boy its 3.5.

  • Is that late?  Most people I know don't seem to start until 2.5 or 3.  Only one of DD's 2.5 year old friends is potty trained and she was mostly trained because her daycare does it at 2.

We are going to start with DD very soon.  I was waiting until after the baby comes.  I figure it is something that we can do that she will get attention.  We will see how it goes. I am not worried.  I don't know anyone over the age of 5 who is not potty trained.

  • He had turned 3 in Feb and was trained in April

  • Mine was pretty resistant to it - as in he'd throw pullups at me - and he just decided to do it on his own right after his 3rd birthday.
  • 2.5 and even 3 never seemed late to me.  However, every kid I know that DD plays with was PT'd before 2.5.  So I sort of feel like a "failure" among the moms I hang with.  They never say anything but I'm the only one changing diapers still.
  • I know its hard to not look at the kids around you but every kid is different. Try the underwear thing, you should try to stay home for a few days when you do it. If she's resistent, don't push her. Let it go and try again in a few months.

    2.5 is late? Really?

I know girls are usually earlier, but I'd say Ethan's friends of both sexes averaged around 3-3.5.

When he started in the 3s at preschool, I think there were only 2 pt trained kids in the whole class! (But by the end of the school year, I think they all were.)

  • sounds like you're hanging out w/ some over-achiever moms. ?2.5-3 is the "norm", not late. ?
  • I don't plan on even trying until the end of this year when DD will be over 2.5 but not quite 3. We'll see how it goes.
  • DS is 2.5 and is just now showing an interest in going on the potty.  He only successfully pooped on the potty this past week.  Up until then he was NOT having it and clearly not ready.  Boys, on average, don't potty train successfully until 3 yrs. 3 mo. according to the pedi.  Not sure about girls.  So, I don't think this is considered "late".
  • We didn't start until about 1 month ago and ds will be 3 on 4/29.  I just didn't think that he was ready before then. It was a rough start, but he's starting to do really well and has even stayed dry overnight a few times. We went cold turkey to underwear and only do pull-ups at night.
