Possible girl name

Hi first post on here. I've been thinking about Mercedes if I have a girl, Sadie for short. I get mixed reviews from friends. I really love this name because it honors my grandmother who recently died. What do you guys think, is it too out there?

Re: Possible girl name

  • If you love it, go for it. I personally like Sadie a lot better by itself.

  • I actually really like this name.  I think it's beautiful.  I knew a girl back in high school who was from Spain named Mercedes and it fit her beautifully.

  • I like Sadie a lot. Mercedes is nms.

  • I like Mercedes. I like Sadie. I will admit I never thought of Sadie as a nn for Mercedes, though. Makes sense though, although the change in spelling actually changes meaning, making it a derivation of the Hebrew name Sarah, meaning princess, instead of the Spanish name Mercedes, meaning merciful.

Because I am anal about that kind of thing, in this instance I would probably be sorely tempted to spell her nn Cede, or even just add the "s" and go for 'Cedes. Not saying I would do it, but I'd be really tempted. And even if I used Sadie, in my head, I'd be spelling it like Mercedes every single time.

  • I had never thought of that as a nickname for Mercedes before.  I like Sadie much better, Mercedes just isn't my style.  But if you like it, go for it!

I'm not a fan of Mercedes and don't really see Sadie being a nn. I knew a Mercedes in high school and no one called her Sadie. Maybe use it as a middle name if you want to honor her?
  • I love Mercedes!  In my HS Spanish class we renamed ourselves with Spanish names, and that's what we went by for the 2 years of Spanish.  My Spanish name was Mercedes :)
  • I like Sadie better than Mercedes personally, but if you are naming her after your grandma than you shouldn't worry too much about what people think.

  • I like Sadie I think it is cute.   Mercedes, NMS
  • And you can name your next children Lamborghini and Corvette Smile

It actually is a common latin name and for the culture it fits.  But if this isn't your culture it is gonna sound off.

The nickname is cute but makes NO sense w/the name.  There is no connection.

  • I baby-sat a little girl with the nn Sadie. One day she informed me that her real name was Mercedes and she grinned and said, "My daddy says like the car!"
    Blank!
  • I like Sadie so much better, but it would be your daughter...GL
  • I like it.  I have a cousin named Mercedes and though I don't know her very well (she's quite a bit older than me), I know that everyone in the family always just called her Sadie.  Also, my best friend is Cuban, and her middle name is Mercedes.  I think both are pretty names.

This isn't true at all.  Sadie is actually a very common nickname for Mercedes.

  • There's a little girl at the school I work at with the name Mercedes....everyone calls her Sadie. I've heard that before...so it's not all that strange to me.

neither name is really my style...but it's a solid good name.

Agreed.  LIke I said a few posts down, my name is Sadie, and growing up I always got the question, "Is it short for Mercedes?"  So it's not as off the wall as everyone seems to think.

  • I actually like it a lot! Go for it, especially since it honors your family.
  • Mercedes is def nms.  However, I don't agree with the posters who said Sadie is not a good nn for Mercedes.  It makes total sense to me.  I do think Sadie is cuter on its own, though.

  • Not too out there at all! I wouldn't pick it, but if it honors your family I think it's great especially with the nn Sadie which is very cute.?

Mercedes reminds me of the girl from America's Next Top Model- not in a bad way. She was cute!?

  • I like the name Sadie by itself
  • I would never think Sadie to be a nn for Mercedes. Interesting.

I like Sadie. It is cute.

  • i LOVE Mercedes for a girl! i've never heard it until now and think sadie would be a fitting nn. gorgeous!
  • I think it's cute, but I'd spell the nickname "Cede".
  • I agree. I like Sadie a lot better by itself. Mercedes sounds like a stripper name.

Wow, that's pretty harsh.  You just insulted several cultures by the way lol (it's a Spanish name FYI-- not just the name of a car).
