Uhh... Babyzone Newsletter.

Just got my weekly Babyzone newsletter, which I generally find interesting.  But today it said this:

 "Baby's Brain in Week 52

--> Right around now, your child is becoming quite a pointer. Few items seen during your daily routines escape his little thrusted finger, and as your baby points, he likely says, "What'sat?" Now you might think doing this is just his way of learning the names of various things: clock, car, sock, plate, pencil, vase, pillow, and so many, many more."

Uh, what?  How many one-year olds do you know that ask what something is?  Henry just started waving, for Pete's sake!  And he did have his first sentence yesterday "Hi Dada!", but he's certainly not asking me what things are or pointing at them in curiosity.

It can't be just us!  Is your almost-1 year old doing this stuff?

  • Seems a bit much to me, too! I don't have a one year old yet but I've done lots of babysitting and I'm hard pressed to remember a 12 month old who did that. :)

I was a one-year-old preschool teacher and this is definately not the norm. Sure, there are some kids who are early talkers, but for the most part, one-year-olds are not! This newsletter seems a bit premature.

  • Actually my son started saying "What's that" at about 9-10 months and really said nothing else until he was about 21 months.  We would tell him whatever it was he was pointing to, and if you asked him where something was, he would point to it.  But he just didn't say anything else.  Then he pretty much started speaking in full sentences when he did start talking.  It just goes to show kids all develop differently.  You can't take those guides too seriously!
  • Emma has been making a noise that sounds like she's saying "wassat?" but I just figured it was a noise. lol, I would never have thought to say, "Yes, My daughter can say 'hi', 'hey', 'mama', 'dada' and 'what's that?'" I suppose I say that "what's that" to her when she looks to find where a noise came from, so maybe she's repeating the noise. Interesting.

  • DD discovered her pointer finger early and would point to everything in sight, but not say "whats dat" until later.
