I was just gifted a bunch of unused flat (and prefold) cloth diapers. I am a bit skeptical of the flats...they just don't look like they could absorb enough! Anyone a fan?
I don't use flats, but one of the benefits of flats is that there a so many ways to fold them, that you can find a perfect fit for your dc's needs. There are a few websites out there with video or pictures of how to do different folds. One place to checkout... www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com
What kind were they? If they were the Gerber birdseye kind, those are 100% worthless as an actual CD. Those make great burp cloths. For CDing you want the diaper-service quality prefold diapers. Look at online CD sites for more information (nickisdiapers.com, etc).
You know... I used a package of the Gerber birdseye flatfolds and cut them into squares, sewed them onto flannel squares for my cloth wipes. That way they have a soft side (flannel) and a "scrubby" side (birdseye). I made almost 60 wipes from the one package, and I love them.
Re: Any flat cloth diaper users?
We use Chinese Prefolds. If you treat thrm by boiling them they get nice and fluffy... I've seen thin cheap ones too.
And cloth diapers don't hold as much water as the highly absorbant gels they use in disposables.
