What's a 5 year old "Talent"??

Our friends are having a Talent Show for the the kids in our area.... These are small kids - like 3-6. What the heck are kids that age going to do?? My nephew is 5 and has no special "talents" exactly yet..... But we know if he gets there and doesn't have anything to do, we know he'll be really upset. So what can a 5 year old do for a "special talent"?? Now my sister and I are brain storming...

We were thinking maybe magic tricks... But then my sis gets the hair brain idea to put a cape on my nephew and dress up my dog (8 lb maltipoo) and have her do tricks... My dog is trained (as well as can be) but because my nephew doesn't have the clearest voice, she doesn't listen super well to his command words. I don't mind him using her but I'm afraid if she doesn't listen that he'll wind up crying because he "failed".... So what else can we do?????

  • He could sing a song or tell a few knock-knock jokes.

I know on Jon & Kate Plus 8, the kids wanted to do a talent show once.  No one could think of their talents to do, so they just did a fashion show in their dress-up clothes and costumes instead.

He actually really wants to "sing a song with Uncle" (aka, my DH!). So I said, yeah, Uncle can play the guitar and you can sing a song and he said NO - me and Uncle sing the song..... DH is soooo not going to go for that! He doesn't even sing for me much less in front of a group full of our friends!

  • DANCING.  5 year-olds dancing like they've got the devil in them is classic!  I used to do the moonwalk when I was 5 and my parents used to make me do it in front of everyone every time we had a dinner party!

  • Sing, dance, play a little-kid instrument (like a kazoo or drums or a recorder or something like that, karate (kid imitation of karate, anyway), impersonations of super heros (Batman cape on, flying around sort of thing), etc ... that's all I can think of for now. I think you're going for the "Awwww" factor and not so much the "wow" factor, and anything that will make him cry is probably not a great idea.
  • Oh! 3-6 year olds have LOTS of talents.

My 3 yo does a simple "magic trick"..its not exaclty wowing- but its adorable. He takes an object that can fit in his hand- then puts a cloth over it...says a few magic words then picks it up with the cloth followed by a "where'd it go..where'd it go?" Then puts the cloth and the object down and says a few more magic words and removes the cloth leaving the object. Like i said- its not wowing- just adorable since he came up with it all by himself one day.

Also- my little boy likes to sing. He doesnt speak really well, yet (he's in speech for a minor delay)- but he speaks clear enough to sing his favorite songs.  He also likes to whistle- maybe you nephew can try that. Not many kids that age can whistle yet- so that would be a HUGE talent!

If your dog can play fetch- have him play fetch with the dog as his talent. Dogs usually dont have to be commanded that much to play fetch.

Also- put on some music and let him dance..dancing is a talent.

It doesnt matter how GOOD he his..it just matters that he's having fun!

Other easy talent stuff: a bouncy ball they sit and jump around on, a hullahoop, a jump rope, "karate" moves...etc
