14 months for sippy cup?

I went to the drs yesterday and asked him ?s about starting solids and that. he said to he wouldn't start trying to give DD a sippy cup till at least 1 and that waiting till 14 months is better. Is that the norm? It seemed kinda late as I wanted DD weaned from her bottle at a year. What do you ladies think?

My pedi told us at our 9mth apt to start with the sippy cup (others I've heard start at 6 months).  A lot of Drs are wanting them off the bottle by 1 year to reduce the possibilities for ear infections and tooth decay from sucking on a bottle.

I'm always amazed at how much conflicting information is out there!  I guess we need to listen to what the "experts" (drs, books, etc) say and then go with what we feel is best.

Seems late to me as well.  Did the pedi want you wait past a year to start whole milk, too?  DS has been using straw cups (with water) since he was 6m and we've had no issues.  I am planning on giving up bottles by 1 year.

We started a sippy at 6 months, and our pedi was impressed.  Maybe your pedi is thinking not to have a sippy replace a bottle until then?  Right now we just put a little water in it and give it to him at meals.  He still gets all his bm/formula from a bottle or me

Our pedi said to start at 6 months but not to push it if DS wasn't ready. 2 months later, he's still not into it.

Our pedi told us at our 6month that we could go ahead and start and hoped that by 9 months that would be all he would use. He does really well with it so far.

We started the sippy at 7 months and DS still doesn't get it. I don't think there's any harm in starting now to get you DC used to it. Some babies get it right away and others need some time to grasp the concept.
