Makes me think of Emmitt Smith.  With one M, it just looks like a typo of the word "emit."  It's not horrific, but it's definitely nms.

Emmett is great.  The spelling you suggested is NMS and IMO ruins an otherwise great name.  I agree that it looks like "emit".
