Is this too similar?

I live in a small town where most of DH's extended family lives.  One of his male cousins has a daugher named Emma.  We were considering the name Emmeline and calling her Emme.  Emma is about 3 years old and would be going to the same school as my child.  Are the names to similar considering they both have the same last name?

I think that's too close if you live in the same place and will be using the same school. Now, if you chose a different nickname, I think it would be fine, but Emma and Emme are damn near pronounced exactly the same so it would probably cause confusion (especially at family gatherings). The name Emma almost always gets shortened at some point to Em, and then they'd be exactly the same.?

Sorry.  If you didn't live in the same small area I would say it's not a big deal at all.  Unfortunately, in your case, I think Emmeline/Emme is way too similar to Emma.

I don't think they're too similar. Besides, it's only a cousin. I had a cousin w/ the same first name as me.

My moms best friend has two granddaughters by different children that were born a month apart.  they are Emma and Ella.  I think it is cute. JMO
