DH's brother thinks it is a bad idea to fly to my baby shower

So DH was talking to his brother last night who couldn't believe I was flying to my baby shower when I am going to be 28 weeks. I live in Vermont but the rest of my family(mom, dad, sister, aunts, grandparents, etc) live in Texas.  So, I was flying there for a baby shower at 28 weeks.  DH's brother couldn't believe it and made DH feel as though I was putting myself(and baby) in danger.  I have never heard this, can you ladies reassure me that flying at that point is ok?  TIA.

  • my dr. says its cool until 36 weeks.

  • From what I've read it's ok, just get up and walk around often.

  • Im sure you will be ok!! just check with your dr...!
  • As long as your doctor says it's okay, then there is absolutely no reason why you can't fly - your DH's brother sounds a bit ignorant.  I'm at a high risk for preterm labor, and my doctor has cleared me to fly up until 30 weeks.

Ditto and that's only because he doesn't want me going too far in case I deliver early, not because flying itself can harm your baby.

  • I'm sure you will be fine! Just ask your doc to make sure, but most docs say it's ok up until 36 weeks. It will be more uncomfortable the further along you are, but that's about it. Make sure you get a pillow!
  • At 28 weeks you'll be fine!  The only thing I would be concerned about would be you comfort.  But even that shouldn't be too bad.  No worries!

  • I would ask your dr. My dr. let me fly when I was 24 weeks, but has said that was my last trip. But I am pg with twins, so it's different.
  • Is your BIL an OB? Because if he isn't, I don't think his opinion matters in the slightest. My Dr. said I'm Ok up to 32 weeks. Ask YOUR Dr. and then make the decision for yourself.

  • There's nothing about the flight itself that can do anything to the pregnancy.  You may have issues with dehydration, swelling, and lightheadedness.  Make sure you get up and walk around a lot and get plenty of fluids.  You'll probably be fine.
  • I am sure you will be fine...like other people said, just check with your doctor.

  • i'm flying from TN to NY for my shower at 26w. my doc said that as long as everything continues with no problems, i can fly until 36w.
  • I think it's hilarious when someone who is not a doctor or has never been pregnant decides they are the authority on having babies or being pregnant.   If your doc is ok with it, go for it!
  • Silly boys.  When I was pg. with DD I flew to Italy at 28 weeks, walked all day every day and flew back at 30 weeks with less jet lag/effect than DH.  Tell him to mind his own uterus!

  • Your brother in law sounds uneducated on pregnancy and alarmist.

What the heck does he think is going to happen?  The increased altitude will cause the amniotic fluid to boil or something??

Even if you went into labor on the plane -- you'd be able to land before you actually gave birth.  It's not like you're flying to Austrailia or something.

Most airlines will let you fly right up until your due date.

Most doctors will let you fly until pretty late.  Usually they ask you to stop around 36 weeks -- but even then, it's not because flying is bad.  It's because you'd be far away if you happened to go into labor!

  • I was told to drink a lot of water when I got there, and get up/walk around once in a while if it's a long flight, and don't be surprised if I swell up a bit after the flight (that's where the water comes in- drinking it will help decrease the swelling faster).

I flew at 13 weeks, and had no problems at all, I didn't even swell up a bit.

  • I'm flying from Cali to Ohio at 30 weeks and then flying back at 31 weeks.  My doctor said it was cool up to 36 weeks, my insurance said it was cool up to 34 weeks and that I need a note from my doctor after 34 weeks if I want them to pay for an early labor, and my airline said I'm good up to 39 weeks.

I would get the info from those three people/groups and then let DH's brother know that you did your checking.  That way he knows you have done your homework and he can get his nose out of your business.

BTW...I also flew to Ohio at 17 weeks and back at 18 weeks with no swelling.  I just got up a few times during the flight, drank lots of water, and (a tip my doc gave me) circled my ankles pretty much the whole flight.  I guess it helps to keep the blood flowing in your legs.

You're fine. My doc told me to be prepared to have the baby wherever I was going after 32 weeks. So I'm not flying anywhere afer that point. 28 weeks is a-ok

  • I flew when I was pregnant with my DD at 27w going there and 28w coming home.  Clearly all went well, as I delivered at 41w a healthy little girl who is about to turn 2.  Only thing my dr had to say about me flying at that point was to bring a copy of my OB records in the off chance something happens while traveling.

  • I fly all the time for work (I'm actually at the airport right now) and my Dr. said to stop flying at 35 weeks.  My boss will make sure I'm flying as long as I'm able.

Is his brother a Dr. or something?  Sounds like he's trying to look out for you but doesn't know what he's talking about.

  • My friend just flew from FL to CA at 34 weeks.  Her doc approved it.  The flight attendant was nervous though!
