Can anyone tell me how I go about getting DD evaluated for speech delay? I'm not sure if there is a deficit, but I think getting her evaluated will either identify a problem or shut some relatives up. : )
I would contact your county early intervention office. They would complete the evaluation and recommend any services. Many of us on the special needs board have a child who is speech delayed.
I'm dealing with that right now as well. ?My pedi hasn't suggested screening just yet, and said we'd reevaluate my girls' progress at their 2-year appt, but I just really see some delays in their speech and want to get the ball rolling on that stuff. ?Anyway, every state is different, but here in TN, we have an Early Intervention program that is run by the state. ?You have to apply and fill out a gazillion pieces of paperwork, and then they send someone out to screen your child (that first step takes months - I guess they're a little overrun right now). ?Then if they determine that your child meets the criteria (something like showing a 30% or more delay in certain areas), then they assign you to someone who comes to your house on a weekly basis for therapy sessions. ?Check with your state to see what programs they have.
Our ped told us that the boys had to be doing certin things by their 15 and 18 month check up. I took Max to the ped last week b/c he had roseola and told her that the boys were no where near close to any of the things she said so she just went ahead and gave me the number now.
I contacted our Early Intervention program and had Amelia evaluated and she qualified for a few services. ?If you call just have them come and give her an evaluation and see what they say. ?good luck!

You can talk to your pedi or call your local health dept and ask about Early Intervention.
