Anyone take Robitussin DM when preg?

I have a horrible chest cold.  I'm totally paranoid about taking meds when preg but last night I broke down adn made DH get me Robitussin DM.  Now my cough is starting to get worse again (always at night!) and DH is making me feel guilty for thinking about taking it again.  I've tried every other "non-medicine" thing I can think of, and it's not just a little cough - it's coughing so hard you almost throw up kind of cough (sorry TMI).

He has me feeling guilty and I already feel like the baby hasn't been moving aroudn as much today.

It's really OK to take it for a few nights, right?

  • It's fine. I had a sinus infection that turned into bronchitis and was taking rX codeine cough syrup, which is ALSO fine. My coughing was so bad that I bruised my ribs:( I'd take the codeine at night and the Robitussin during the day(so I wouldn't be drowsy).

Once I ran out of the codeine, I took the Robitussin at night with Benedryl, and rubbed Vicks on my chest and feet(rub on the soles and cover with socks). I actually slept better doing that than I did taking up to three tsp. of the codeine! Your baby will be fine, I promise. I hope you feel better soon=)

  • So funny - I did the vicks on the feet last night too!!  It usually works like a charm for me, but last night I was coughing so hard that I was dry heaving.  Finally when I had tears running down my face and felt like I had run a marathon, I gave in.

I saw my OB on Monday -she wanted to give me a z-pack then (I sound horrible!), but I wanted to try to wait it out.  I told her if I don't feel better by Friday I will call and start taking it.

The WORST part is that my DS is getting it now and I feel horrible b/c there is NOTHING he can take for a cough.  Poor little man :(

  • Actually, your son can take children's benadryl. Your pediatrician can figure out the dosage for you. That, paired with the Vick's and a vaporizer should keep him pretty comfy. This is what we do for my children(who are responsible for infecting me with this plague!). As for the antibiotics, ask for a script of Amoxicillian. It's also safe for pregnancy, but it's more effective for upper respitory infections. I did a course of the Z-pack, and it STILL turned into bronchitis. I'm on a 7-day course of Amoxicillian now just to beat a garden-variety sinus infection. Pregnancy can really make your immunity weak!

  • Well... unfortunately I have one of the small percentage of children who become HYPER from Benadryl - ugh!  I haven't tried it for a while, but I'm not sure if that is something that changes.  When I gave it to him around 13 months, he took a 15 min nap that day and was bouncing off of the walls :(

Then there is me, that is allergic to Amoxicillin/Penicillin :(  My OB said the way I sounded, she was afraid that it was going to turn into pneumonia or something (it's TOTALLY in my chest).

Grrrrr.... no joke about a weakend immune system - I never get sick like this when I'm NOT preg!!! :(

I hope YOU are feeing better!!! :)

  • Boooo! I'd definitely NOT chance the benedryl just for a cough, then! The last thing a sick mommy needs is a hyper, sick child! It's hard enough to care for them when you are ill, let alone when they are bouncing off the walls! And, yeah. You'd probably do better to listen to your OB about the antibiotics;) I'm not a doctor, I just play one on the nest! I hope you feel better, soon, too!

  • That's on my list of OK meds but I understand your hesitancy. The baby could also be not moving as much from not drinking enough water. A cold may be dehydrating you a little more than usual. Take the meds if you need them and make sure you're drinking enough too!  Feel better - my cold is just going away after 4 LONG weeks!
