Trying to Get Pregnant

Copper IUD removal questions

Hi.

Anyone here have a Paraguard (copper) IUD removed?  What were your experiences.

I plan on getting my IUD removed in July so I can start trying to conceive in August.  I think i remember my doc saying to have it removed near the end of my period so it is easier and less painful.  Does having it removed affect my period in anyway?  Assuming I always have a 28 day cycle should I expect any difference due to the removal?  Will it make me have a period sooner or will i just bleed from the removal (though not my period)?  I forgot to ask that because if so i may get it out a month earlier because i don't want it to possibly take away one month of possibly conceiving.

Thanks so much!!!

Re: Copper IUD removal questions

  • I don't know first hand, but I believe you cycle naturally with a copper IUD, so you can expect your cycle lengths to remain the same...

  • Firstly, everyone's experiences/bodies are different.  This is just my experience.  It does not mess up your cyles at all.  My periods are now lighter and shorter, but they # of days in my cycle is roughly the same.  However, while it is possible to conceive your first month, my experience was that it took awhile for my body to readjust.  My periods became shorter and lighter over the last four months since I had it removed.  This leads me to believe that it can take awhile to get rid of residual copper ions.  If you were to get it removed a month early, be prepared for getting pregnant the first month, but I wish I had knowing what I know now about my cycle.

I got mine taken out the last day of my period.  just a coicedence.  I didn't notice any difference between getting it out then and when i got the mirena taken out a few years ago.  Just a little cramping, that's all.  Not even as bad as my af cramps.

Good luck, and let me know if you have anymore questions

  • I had mine taken out in November, mid cycle, and it didn't hurt at all, which was a relief compared to what it felt like having it put in!  My periods have gotten lighter and shorter with less cramping since I've had it removed.  I know it's possible to conceive the first month after having it removed, but it didn't happen that way for me.  GL!
  • Mine partially expelled, so removal was easy. My flow got lighter and shorter (the copper can make it heavier) but not much else changed. I temped through having the Paragard and there was no difference on that front since there is no chemical in it. My doctor (who I love, but I think he is wrong on this) says to give it 3-6 months after having it out before really counting the months as TTC. I questioned him on this since it is chemical-free. I wasn't satisfied with his rebuttal and Paragard says 1 month.
