For those who have used decals...

I just saw some cute decals at https://dalidecals.com/ I wasn't sure I'd ever be a fan of decals but some are soooooooo cute! So here's my question...for those of you who have used them, were your walls textured? Mine are and I'd really hate to do a skimcoat of drywall (already done it in two other rooms in the house because I just hate that basic "knockdown" texture) but will do it if I need to. Thanks in advance!

Re: For those who have used decals...

  • I just put one on the wall this weekend.  My walls are textured and it does make it a bit challanging but if you go slow when you are pealing to make sure that the pieces are sticking to the wall it sould work just fine.

We used a credit card to smooth the decal out and we would take sections of the paper and rip it off slowly then cut the paper to we didn't have it get in the way if that makes sense....we did a tree decal so it was 5' tall.

You shouldn't have to add a skimcoat at all.

  • my tree is decal and our walls are textured.  actually - the tree came from dali decals. :)

that said; they have two different kinds of vinyl - just be sure to let them know you have textured walls when you order and they will be sure to send you the right kind of vinyl.

they sent us a special tool to stick the decal on the wall with and it worked very well.  we did have to be extra careful with the smaller parts of the tree and had to go very slow in peeling off the backing.  my husband peeled and i smoothed out the parts and helped them stick to the wall.  all in all - the whole decal took less than 45 minutes and it looks great.

good luck!  oh - and pm me if you decide to go with dali decals.  if you use my name you can get 5% off.  (which i know isn't much... but every little bit helps!)

  • I did one last night, and it's still driving me nuts!!

My walls are not textured, and we took our time putting it on. I came back in the room this morning to some of the letters gently lifting on the corners etc... I'm going to go over it again and again with a credit card and hope that works.

  • we have a quote in our kitchen, on textured walls - and I had trouble getting it to stick... my super handy hubby suggested we try to use the blow-dryer to  make the adhesive a bit more sticky... so I blew with low air on high and he rubbed down with a credit card - and it worked fantastically!
  • our walls have very little texture.  i put a bird decal in dd's room -you can see it in the background of this pic:

  • I'm familiar with Uppercase Living (https://sarah.uppercaseliving.net) and they have some adorable things for nurseries and you can design your own if you want to do monogram, kids names, or whatever.  They do work on textured walls but you do just have to go a little slower like some suggestion.  And the hairdryer suggestion is a great one. Sometimes if the vinyl gets too cold it works better to warm it up a little with the hairdryer to help ease the lettering off.
